“…I will burn the world to ash before I let something happen to you.”

Forty-thousand years after the fall of the Alaric Empire, Valgard has become a corrupt wasteland of a kingdom. The late king spent years protecting his title, just to fall to his own curse. Now that his son has taken the crown, Penelope doesn’t believe things are as good as they seem.

How does the orphaned daughter of a city that gave her nothing more than a dirt floor shack and a life in a guild designed to kill orphans survive the impossible and become the kings apprentice? As it turns out, nothing is impossible when you are the only person alive who has power.

When Penelope's mother discovered her power when she was three, she gave her one rule - hide it. But, no amount of hiding can keep you from fate - even when that fate is undecided. She must travel across the sea to Cadenia where she will meet the only people who can help her find the truth. Facing a giant sea dragon is just the start of this heroines adventure as she learns the truth of her past and must decide where her heart lies.

HelplessKelby C. Hughes🌟🌟🌟🌟/5🌶/5🌿 Dystopian🌿 Morally Grey🌿 Strong FMC🌿 Enemies-to-Lovers🌿 Forced Proximity🌿 No SmutThis book was so much fun! It took me a little while to get hooked into the story, but once I got hooked, I couldn't put the book down. This book is a slow burn, but I thought the slow burn made me grow a stronger connection to the characters. There were so many twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat. The ending has me needing more! I can't wait to see what else Kelby has up her sleeve! For this being a debut novel, she knocked it out of the park!

This journey with Penelope has been a great one. All the twists, shock, friendships, and love that was created were just perfect.
Penelope is such a strong female character that takes no crap from anyone. She will do everything she can to save what's her!
All the untold unknown that's waiting to be shared, I can't wait to find out what's in store!

The world building was just the perfect amount to where you didn't feel overwhelmed or bored! The love interest is also at the perfect level for this story!

Umm, not again, another damn cliffhanger!!!

Penelope is badass, her friends are too! Her adventure is not what I expected, and things happen really fast, but even with all of that, I now NEED the next book.

The book is definitely YA and there is sexual tension but no 🌶️. Oh well, maybe the next book will be a little less tame!!!

Helpless by Kelby C. Hughes

Now I love fantasy and esp fantasy romance but I’m a dark romance girl at heart. & even though it was PG romance I still wasn’t disappointed. With fantasy comes world building and there is this but it wasn’t to the extreme that I got confused and had to keep going back and rereading to understand.

Penelope is a strong FMC, has been through the wringer, and still wants to help everyone. Girl knows how to fight and has many tricks up her sleeve. & Hadeon how I pictured him whew.

Many plot twists that I didn’t see coming, I love that! I do wish there was a tad more character development, but maybe that comes with book 2. Speaking of, there BETTER be a book 2, that ending left me needing more.

Penelope has powers she has kept hidden, but those powers allow her to do specific jobs for the king as his apprentice. Penelope seems to be good at this job until the king abruptly reassigns her. When she leaves for this reassignment, her live suddenly blows up all around her. Now she is part of a rebellion that she had no idea was happening, and she is rediscovering friends and family.

When I say this book was fast-paced, I mean FAST-PACED! Everything is thrown at you rather quickly. Helpless has all the tropes I love: corrupt rulers vs. rebels, dystopian society, hidden magical powers, enemies to lovers, discovering unknown family members, etc. The storyline is there and so is the potential to be great. However, the book is too short (only 200 pages) so everything is thrown at you so fast. You can't write a successful fantasy book in 200 pages. There is zero build up to anything, which means no tension and no amazing reveals. Everything that would have happened normally in an entire book, all happened in the first 30% of Helpless. I want to love this, but book two has to slow down the pacing or this won't be an enjoyable series. If you are looking for a quick read while waiting for another book, then this might be the perfect solution, but be prepared for the cliffhanger at the end with no book 2 yet. I'm giving Helpless 3 stars, but I wish it could be more!

What an action packed story. From page one until the end, or was it? The main character Penelope is such a diverse and multi level individual. The details of her childhood are given in such detail you feel her pain and makes you clap and root her on for each of her accomplishments. The story then embroils her with need to save her people she never knew about. Along the way her and her companions fight a kraken, use their magical powers, fight an ocean dragon along with all the people who try to stop her. She finds love along the way along with such happiness she has never known. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
