Growing up in the Panama Canal Zone, Lynne lived in a bubble with lush
green gardens, protected homes, and little crime. There was a large police and military
presence and an abundance of highly qualified teachers in the public high school.
Her life was simple and safe. This United States territory’s sole purpose was to protect and

maintain the Panama Canal.

Everyone knew everyone. Many of the residents were Baptists or Catholics. Lynne and
her family were in a Jewish minority, and she experienced anti-Semitism throughout her
childhood.

Across the street was the city of Panama, a place full of diversity and the loud noises of
buses and taxis. There were tall buildings, constant traffic, and crowded streets which provided
the excitement of a large metropolis.

It was here, that she and Tino, the love of her life, chose to start their family.
Their story is like the intricacies of a puzzle where all the corners and edges were
connected. Suddenly some of the middle pieces were eliminated, complicating family norms and
challenging the normal highs and lows of everyday life.

As I read this book, I found myself in awe of her heroic triumphs over what can be life's most difficult times.
