They’re dropping like flies
When my ants arrived, a good amount arrived dead, which was ok because about 20 of them were alive and for our ant farm, that seemed okay. We got our ants on Jan 25. Today is Jan 31 and only six of them are still alive. We’ve followed instructions for feeding and watering the habitat, but they’re still dwindling. I’m going to take them outside and hopefully give these six some type of chance, but since ants live in colonies I don’t think that’ll work well. It’s just very disappointing to watch this happen. I don’t particularly love ants, but since I bought them and brought them into my home I feel a strong sense of responsibility for them and had I known this would happen to them, I wouldn’t have bought them in the first place. It was fun to watch them build their tunnels though! Super cool for a science lesson for the kids.

I ordered 2 tubes. TWO TUBES! 2 is wayyyyyy too many. If you’re thinking about getting Andy’s and you’re like “hmm I want to have enough to watch them create nice tunnels and have friends” DON’T. Only 1. Ok?

I ordered an ant farm for my kids at the beginning of the 22’-23’ school year…. That was a year ago, and these ants are still alive!!
Like, we left for a month and put a piece of bread in there and wished them luck, and when we came back they were ALL STILL ALIVE! If you wants ants as a permanent pet, then look no further because these are the ants for you!

They are Harvester ants. And that’s about all I know about them. My kids lost interest in them after the first 2 weeks (once their ant unit was done) and it has been my sole responsibility to care for these tiny, ugly, undying life forms. I have no idea what to do with them. I tried taking them to some open abandoned field to release them. Like, opened their cage and was like “be free!” And just watched for 30 mins as they went out then back into the ant farm.

So I just opened all the holes and shook the crap out of the ant farm and about half of them dropped out. The other half decided they would like the farm as their permanent residence. So now I’m stuck with about 12 Harvester ants.

I mean, they’re well-behaved and low maintenance so I guess they’ve got that going for them.

I ordered these for my daughter for our new gel ant farm last week, they were not supposed to be here until closer to her birthday, but they hot here sooner, after paying for ants ($7) and even more for shipping ($8), which they were only mailed 1st class USPS not overnight or even priority, which at that postal rate, it should have been priority, they were received in a bubble envelope, so nothing to protect them from cold or heat, they say they guarentee them during that 7 day period, but weather changes and the heat of inside a mail truck for days!!! Come on, really, so mine got here early, so the weather guarentee doesn't even apply here based off the supposed delivery date because you first can't rely on weather reports 2 weeks in advance, which is what I was expecting, but it got here today, so over a week early, so how was I supposed to predict the weather everywhere they are traveling in between the 2000 mile journey of the address in WA state???? YOU CAN'T!! IT'S NOT LOGICAL!! AND all but 4 were dead. The rest were just pieces and parts of ant bodies, so either they ate each other or they got shaken around so hard they fell apart! Not the way you should ship them, if it's in the summer or winter. Nor should you have to pay $8 for a $1 shipping first class USPS cost. They also need to put VENOMOUS right up top on order details. Now the ants I bought last week now cost over $26 now plus shipping, that's more than $1 per ant, at that price they better be overnighted with a refrigerated pak.

Nice to have a reliable service. These Harvester ants come in padded envelope and taped to an inner instructions sheet. Had delivery before and every ant always arrived alive and well. They do need an hour to adjust to new surroundings after being transported. Active stingers on these guys! My error in handling - not a pleasant experience - so be nice to them. The latest 50 are inquisitive and created tunnels in my oval vivarium. I lost my first batch by using a gel ant farm (yuk)- now I have fine earth & sand mix in a bigger glass bowl kept away from direct sunlight. I feed with live food from Petco as well as some kitchen scraps. I sprayed with fine water mist bottle every week on the surface to simulate rain. Healthy and happy guys after two weeks. Will expand next month into a larger tank with live plants. Great to watch and educational. I keep them on my shaded outside balcony. Will be buying again soon!

The ants arrived all dead. I have contacted the seller and am still waiting for a response. My 7 yes old has been waiting anxiously for them because he got an ant farm container for Christmas. He is going to be very disappointed when he sees the dead ants and finds out we have to order new ones. The seller webpage states that we are responsible for buying them when the temps are not too low. We live in north Texas and in the past days we have had cold days but not drops bellow 40. I hope the seller reimburses us or sends new ants in an expedite shipping. I am happy to update this post if we get a positive response. Otherwise I will leave it as a warning to other buyers.
UPDATE
I contacted costumer service and they were very responsive. It took them less than 4 hrs to respond. Carlos was very nice and asked us to wait 24 hrs to see if the ants came back from hibernation. They did not. As soon as I notified them they sent another batch. I am waiting for the replacement ants. So far the costumer service has been amazing. Hopefully the second batch will make it. I will keep updating this post.

First, we got the uncle Milton large ant farm which is a good size. We chose it as the “medium” option between the traditional and another much larger one. I wouldn’t go smaller and would probably rather get two of these for $40 total and link them together with the included tube than do 1 bigger one. But VERY important - if you’re tempted to get two tubes, don’t! Another reviewer said the same and saved me from over doing it.

Ordered this in order to have ants for the ant farm on Christmas. We waited too long and they arrived on the 26th, but it was better this way. Putting the ants in the farm is an event worth allocating a decent amount of time for and is very fun watching them get going. I wouldn’t worry about giving the farm and ants together, although 2-5 weeks is a long time to wait.

The instructions say you can keep them in the tube in the fridge for up to 7 days. We put them in the fridge for a day. We put them in the bathtub as suggested but it wasn’t really necessary. However, I wouldn’t take chances! They’re bigger than I expected and 3 were fairly active right away.

I think they all arrived alive. It appears there might be dead ant parts or seed pods they’re busily moving around - I can’t tell. But there are around 25 live ones.

All in all I can’t give anything but 5 stars because everything is as promised.
