I ordered an ant farm for my kids at the beginning of the 22’-23’ school year…. That was a year ago, and these ants are still alive!!
Like, we left for a month and put a piece of bread in there and wished them luck, and when we came back they were ALL STILL ALIVE! If you wants ants as a permanent pet, then look no further because these are the ants for you!
They are Harvester ants. And that’s about all I know about them. My kids lost interest in them after the first 2 weeks (once their ant unit was done) and it has been my sole responsibility to care for these tiny, ugly, undying life forms. I have no idea what to do with them. I tried taking them to some open abandoned field to release them. Like, opened their cage and was like “be free!” And just watched for 30 mins as they went out then back into the ant farm.
So I just opened all the holes and shook the crap out of the ant farm and about half of them dropped out. The other half decided they would like the farm as their permanent residence. So now I’m stuck with about 12 Harvester ants.
I mean, they’re well-behaved and low maintenance so I guess they’ve got that going for them.
UPDATE
I contacted costumer service and they were very responsive. It took them less than 4 hrs to respond. Carlos was very nice and asked us to wait 24 hrs to see if the ants came back from hibernation. They did not. As soon as I notified them they sent another batch. I am waiting for the replacement ants. So far the costumer service has been amazing. Hopefully the second batch will make it. I will keep updating this post.

Ordered this in order to have ants for the ant farm on Christmas. We waited too long and they arrived on the 26th, but it was better this way. Putting the ants in the farm is an event worth allocating a decent amount of time for and is very fun watching them get going. I wouldn’t worry about giving the farm and ants together, although 2-5 weeks is a long time to wait.
The instructions say you can keep them in the tube in the fridge for up to 7 days. We put them in the fridge for a day. We put them in the bathtub as suggested but it wasn’t really necessary. However, I wouldn’t take chances! They’re bigger than I expected and 3 were fairly active right away.
I think they all arrived alive. It appears there might be dead ant parts or seed pods they’re busily moving around - I can’t tell. But there are around 25 live ones.
All in all I can’t give anything but 5 stars because everything is as promised.
