Despite its popularity in Eastern cultures, and though Eastern and Western scholars alike recognize it as a literary masterpiece, the Ramayana is unknown to most in the West. This edition gives English-speaking readers the best opportunity yet to discover and enjoy this ancient classic.

The
Ramayana, perhaps the world’s oldest literature, is both a spellbinding adventure and a work of profound philosophy, offering answers to life’s deepest questions. It tells of another time when gods and heroes walked among us, facing supernatural forces of evil and receiving guidance from powerful mystics and sages. Revered throughout the ages for its moral and spiritual wisdom, the beautiful and uplifting tale of romance and high adventure recounts the odyssey of Rama, a great king of ancient India. Rama, along with his virtuous, courageous wife Sita and faithful brother Lakshmana, is exiled to the forest for fourteen years. There, Sita is abducted by the powerful demon Ravana. With his brother and a fantastic army of supernatural creatures, Rama embarks on a perilous quest to find his beloved Sita.

Easy to follow essential story of this devotional classic.

Was watching a movie called Ram Setu...it's premise was of Ramayana. Of course, I had to dig a little, because I love learning about the world, history, etc. This story is an epic in terms of, well, thw ruins of Ram Setu, but moreover, the 'why' of what sparked a movie...thank you :)

I didn't know the content of this indian famous epic, but somehow i was eager to unfold it. Rama is the man of all virtues, capable of bearing every kind of adversity, and even when he's fighting Ravana, the personification of evil, he's quite accurate and fair. When Ravana falls e approaches him and sees greed, power, anger and selfishness departing, all the ego masks, he claims be facing a son of god. Pure poetry ;)

Very simple and enjoyable rendition of the Ramayana, however I feel that much was left out, like Rama’s worship of Shiva, for instance.

My only reading of Ramayana, but this English translation flowed nicely. The interactive index is fine. There were very, very few typos. I did sample the other attempts at more literal translations which seemed more like work than pleasure reading. Since I don't read sanskrit for the real musical flow, this version's retelling seemed like a good effort to provide that. I was pleased to have spent the money versus the free ones.

Excellent Ramayan, well told and it finally resolved a deep issue I had with Seeta Devi being sent away after Ram's return to Ayodhya. This telling is true to Valmiki's original epic and anyone who wants to get clear on the original storyline, should read this.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest stories ever told
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 14, 2013
I have always loved classical mythology and recently started getting interested in Hindu beliefs and myths. The Ramayana is a central text and I downloaded the kindle version of Krishna Dharma's retelling for 2 reasons. First of all, I wanted a prose version as I prefer to have meaning over meter. Secondly, this version was rated higher than the other versions. On both counts I got exactly what I was looking for. The Ramayana is one of the truly exceptional stories told by humankind. It is a story of duty, truth, virtue and love overcoming all obstacles and it is told beautifully by someone who is not only intelligent and insightful, but also truly loves the Ramayana and all the characters in it.

I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in world mythology or anyone looking for something special in an increasingly mundane and technological world. It is a story that is meant to speak directly to your soul and is told by a true storyteller who understands that. The only regret I have is that it has taken so long to read this. A truly brilliant and life affirming story

Ein schönes Epos in einer ansprechenden Paperback Aufmachung mit schönen Abbildungen. Leider die typisch bruchanfällige Bindung von der Insel, aber is ja auch kein Buch für die S-Bahn.
