APD: 1 dead after officer-involved shooting, family dispute in south Amarillo

An officer-involved shooting has left one person dead during an investigation into a family dispute in South Amarillo Sunday night, according to a news release from the Amarillo Police Department.

About 11:14 p.m. Sunday, March 24, Amarillo officers were checking a local store in reference to an alarm call. A citizen flagged down the officers and asked them to check a residence near 6300 Leigh for a possible family dispute.

As officers arrived, a man was leaving the scene in a vehicle, fleeing officers and crashed into a home in the 2700 block of Reis. A small child was in the bedroom where the vehicle had entered, and the child was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

As officers were exiting their vehicles, the suspect shot at police, APD said, and officers then returned fire and struck the suspect. No officers were injured.

The man, identified as Jesus Rodriguez, 30, was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The APD Homicide Unit is investigating this incident.
