Lunch at The Battlefield Country Store

When we arrived for lunch at The Battlefield Country Store in Fredericksburg, we were surprised by the size and scope of goodies found under the same roof. The barn-style shop has an ordering window for ice cream on its porch, a coffee shop in the back corner, and endless cases and shelves of country delights. The sandwich shop — the reason we came — was in the far back corner.

Ordering at the Deli

We weren’t the only ones interested in lunch at The Battlefield Country Store, either. There was a crowd at the deli, but the long line moved quickly and we’d soon given our order.

While chatting with the deli counter employees, we learned that The Battlefield Country Store has amassed quite a following on social media in the last few years, mostly due to its outrageous weekly specials. That’s exactly how we’d heard of it, too. The post that caught our eye was an image of The Big Messy, a barbecue sandwich topped with bacon slices and macaroni and cheese.

Since the specials rotate, it wasn’t available by the time we got to the sandwich shop (womp womp), but we were happy to find the current week’s special, an Italian sandwich, sounded just as good. The Battlefield Country Store offers a meal deal that includes a bag of Route 11 chips and a soda. You all know how I feel about fountain soda and supporting small businesses — I couldn’t resist!

Other Goodies

While waiting for our sandwiches, we browsed. I’m a sucker for a country store. Even the most basic ones have candies that bring on waves of nostalgia. The best ones, like The Battlefield Country Store, serve homemade goodies that bring back memories of church potlucks. I found chilled banana pudding and éclair cake, shelves of breads and jams, and whole pecan pies for sale by the checkout.

By the time our sandwiches were ready, we’d filled our arms with so many treats that we had to make a second trip to the register!

Though the shop itself had a few places to sit, there was plenty outside. We found a good spot and settled in for lunch.

This sandwich was 8″ long and it must’ve weighed two pounds. It was massive! We quickly realized we’d ordered way too much food. We’d only ordered three sandwiches for our family of five, but we still had a whole sandwich for our doggie bag.

All of our sandwiches were delicious. The bread was very crusty, but chewy inside. While I’m not typically a fan of sweet meat, even the honeyed ham was good! The meat was so flavorful that I didn’t even bother using the side of Italian dressing.

We had plans for coffee and ice cream, but we were much too full of other goodies to see them through. I guess we just have to visit again to try Battlefield Coffee Company’s signature Victory Roast!
