What People are Saying About This

From the Publisher

Assisted living is incredibly complex, with great nationwide variability in regulation, size, services, staffing, delivery models, and financing. Out of the chaos, this book offers clarity and understanding. Through a multidisciplinary lens, with consideration for state-level differences, each chapter offers a complete picture of the nuances of field. Chapters include perspectives on: the history of assisted living, policy, organizational structure, care, staffing, safety, business, financial management, law and liability, disaster preparedness, concepts of aging, principles and models of care, facility design, ethnic, cultural, and sexual diversity, physiological and psychological changes with aging, dementia, hospice and palliative care, and elder resident rights. The second edition of Assisted Living Administration and Management: Effective Practices and Model Programs in Elder Care should be a first stop for anyone with an interest in assisted living.

- Daniel David, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor, Rory Meyers College of Nursing, New York University , New York, NY

Propelled by the Covid-19 pandemic, society faced the daunting revelation that older adults residing in long-term care settings faced much high rates of morbidity and mortality, due to inadequacies in their administration and management. In the U.S., assisted living facilities are the fastest growing segment in this sector. The timely publication of this book needed now more than ever, offers the critical knowledge about evidence-based practices and resources relevant to administrators, staff, families, gerontology students, and policy makers to address these inadequacies. Major domains are: Organizational, Human Resources, Business, Legal, Financial, Environmental, and Resident Care. Each chapter is written by one or more content experts on the topic with explicit objectives, related historical background, regulatory landscape, practical care delivery aspects, challenges, resources, and future directions. Given the lack of national standards in assisted living and the variety of regulatory approaches across the States, the contemporary tables and charts that highlight these differences by State along with links to key policy, advocacy, and consumer resources are very helpful. The second edition not only updates the award-winning content from the first edition but also adds contempory material on ethics, ethnicity, culture, diversity, disparity, and resident rights issues. For those interested in learning about assistive living, Assisted Living Administration and Management: Effective Practices and Model Programs in Elder Care is a necessity!

- Diane Feeney Mahoney, PhD, GNP-ret, FGSA, FAAN, Professor Emerita, MGH Institute of Health Professions, Boston, MA and Senior Gerontologist, EDDEE Consulting, Boston, MA

The second edition of Assisted Living Administration and Management: Effective Practices and Model Programs in Elder Care offers a well-written and thorough overview of assisted living administration and management that can be of benefit to a broad audience. From increasing awareness of family members who are looking for a better understanding of long-term care options and information related to the unique characteristics of the assisted living environment, to long-term care administrators who desire increased insight into the multiple components of assisted living management, this book is an essential and valuable resource. The inclusion of information pertaining to common age-related changes in neuropsychological functioning, in addition to overviewing psychological conditions as they relate to adjustment and adaptation to optimal functioning for individuals within the assisted living setting, emphasizes the depth and relevance of this invaluable resource.

- Lisa Lind, PhD, Licensed Psychologist, Chief of Quality Assurance, Deer Oaks Behavioral Health, San Antonio, TX and President, Psychologists in Long-Term Care (PLTC)

Assisted Living Facilities account for a substantial proportion of the long term care recipient population, yet as we were reminded by the covid-19 pandemic, these facilities are often under resourced in the timeliness of public health oversight and other health and social service assistance. This book offers a practical approach to key issues in the routine and crisis management of an assisted living facility. It is especially pleasing to see the long needed collaboration between nursing, social services, and the emphasis given to the training needs of the direct care staff. The authors have made an important update to their first edition. This work continues to be a milestone for the field of aging and assisted living administration.

-Robert Newcomer, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Institute for Health & Aging, University of California, San Francisco, CA
