Performances can range from 15 – 60 minutes depending upon your needs. This educating as well as entertaining program is now being made available for use in schools, churches; ministries, civic and community organizations. This version contains language geared to older students and adults. However, "EIP" packets are available for elementary students as well. Sample vocabulary words and character synopses are included. A curriculum specialist has approved its language and primary content.

Keep in mind it would be a daunting task to list all the accomplishments of all African Americans in every field or discipline from the Middle Passage to today. The goal of Experience in Pride is to touch upon the various successes of African Americans as it relates to the overall history of this country. Character monologues in this script focus on earlier historical individuals. It is a starting point for further study and research.

About the Author

In the mid 1980’s when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday was recognized as a national holiday, Yvonne Brake and Fred Johnson saw the need to educate African American children about their rich and proud history. As founder and executive director of Because He Cares, an urban outreach ministry utilizing drama as an educational tool, Yvonne believed the ministry could provide the platform to deliver this message.

In 1986, Yvonne and Fred Johnson, a member of Because He Cares Drama Team, researched and wrote “Experience In Pride…Journey through African American History. For nearly twenty years this play has been presented to tens of thousands of people in schools, churches, universities, community organizations, and ministries in a four state region.

Fred Johnson earned a masters degree in 1993 and a doctorate in 1999 from Kent State University, establishing himself as a noted African-American historian through his scholarship and writing. He currently serves as an Associate Professor of American History at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

At present he is also completing work on America’s Blind Spot: U.S. Foreign Policy in Africa, 1945 to Present. Yvonne Brake has a diploma in Church Theology from Ashland Theoogical Seminary, BA in Management from Malone University, and a Master's Degree in Nonprofit Management from Case Western Reserve University.
