Joanna and Stephen meet by chance, fall in love. During a few glorious weeks together, they explore each other's lives - now and then.

He discovers some of her boyfriends were violent. She discovers he left his wife because of her violence.

The two become closer than either has been to anyone before. His wife then threatens to kill herself. He decides to go back to her. Their love affair ends in tears of desolation.

For twenty years they hear nothing of each other. Then, again by chance, they meet. They quickly rediscover their love.

Stephen tells her how, after he went back to his wife, he suffered more violence, and left her.

Joanna tells him how, after they parted, she met men who became her clients... until one became her husband.

Will she decide to stay with her husband or to leave him? Will he decide to stay on his own?

Or will they decide to live together... and not just now and then?
