About This Item

New York, 1800. Very good, extremities worn, few edge tears, none affecting text, light soiling and ink bleed through.. 3 broadsheets. Approx. 8 x 12 1/2 inches. Three bail bonds, printed and completed in manuscript, issued & signed by New York County Sheriff, James Morris (1764-1827) on the verso. With seals.

1. The earliest, dated March 30th, 1799, was issued to and signed by Garrit Van Horne, David M. Clarkson, and Frederick De Peyster, for the sum of $400. Signed by Morris on verso, May 6th, 1799. " Due to appear at the Court of Common Please, or the Mayor's Court, on April 2nd, to answer unto "Robert Jenkins survivor of Abriel Jenkins of a plea of trespass on the case of his damage of two hundred Dollars (as is said)." Van Horne & Clarkson was an American merchant company engaged in the West Indies trade. Frederick De Peyster (1758-1834), married to Helen Livingston, fought for British crown during the Revolution.

2. The second, issued to Abraham [Shadock] Chadwick and John Murray on November 23rd, 1799, for the sum of $1,000. Verso signed by James Morris on December 4th, 1799. "Due to appear at the Court of Common Please, or the Mayor's Court, on December 3, to answer unto "John Backwell of a plea of trespass Assault and Battery to his damage of five hundred Dollars (as is said)."

3. The last, dated January 24th, 1800, was issued to Edward Goodrich and Samuel Paxton, for the sum of $500. Morris' signature on verso, dated February 5th, 1800. "Due to appear at the Court of Common Please, or the Mayor's Court, on Feb. 4 to answer unto 'Israel [Hoyt] of a plea of trespass on the case to his damage two hundred and fifty Dollars (as is said)" Signed by Edward Goodrich and Samuel Paxton.
