Why this petition matters

Started by Rachel Hawkins

I was born and raised in Hanham and spent a great deal of my childhood in the wonderful Hanham Library.  Appreciating the fantastic array of books they had and always enjoying a school excursion to the library itself on occasion.

A few days ago, I visited the library for the first time in years, with my 2 year old son.  I was pleasantly surprised to see the addition of the kids corner, complete with large bean bags for the children to sit on, IT and of course the superb selection of books for all ages.

My son and I spent some time together reading books.  We really did have a lovely time.  There were a few children from the local pre-school who seemed to be having the time of their life, playing, reading and drawing.  It was a great moment for me to reminisce about my childhood spent in the very same library some 20 odd years ago whilst seeing my son enjoy the experience too.

Thus, it was with great disappointment and a tinge of sadness to find a group had been set up on Facebook entitled Save Hanham Library.

Save Hanham Library I thought?  Who on earth has decided to close such a fantastic community hub?

If the proposed plans to cut the opening times/days of the library go ahead then it will be nothing but a crying shame.

As Hanham's population grows in size, especially with the recent addition of new housing estates, a library is of huge importance to the community and indeed to the new generation.

I urge the council to rethink their plans and to keep the library open; full time.
