Venice, Bacaro del Gelato

Tell us about your first impressions when you arrived.
Bacaro del Gelato is a teensy gelateria created by two young Venetians devoted to the classics. The bright, simple storefront gets straight to the point: traditional gelato, done well. A chalkboard menu displays the day's offerings.

What was the crowd like?
A remote location (in Cannaregio) and small size (the gelateria can only fit about three people) means you might be the only one here. If not, you'll likely be squeezing in with one or two locals at a time.

What should we be drinking?
Milkshakes and affogato, both with gelato, of course.

On to the gelato: What should we order
The dark chocolate is rich and bittersweet, making it one of the top sellers. The pistachio, hazelnut, and tiramisu all follow close behind, but whatever you order, opt to put your scoops in a homemade brioche for an otherworldly gelato sandwich.

And how did the front-of-house folks treat you?
The young Venetians who run this shop are good at making anyone feel at home.

What’s the real-real on why we’re coming here?
When you need a break from central Venice’s hustle, a canal-side stroll out to this homespun gelateria offers much relief.
