It’s always a good idea when Surfing at Saunton Beach to Hire a Longer, wider surfboard. This is due to the fact that waves at Saunton tend to be a little slower and less “Steep” than they can be at places like Croyde Beach. We have been operating out of our Little Pink Shop in Croyde since 1987 and will assist you in choosing the correct equipment for your ability, the wave type & time of the year.
Saunton Sands is one of the best beaches in the South West for beginner and intermediate surfers. The waves are slow and sloping which makes it easier to ride. The rolling white water nearer the shore is soft and easy to manage, as opposed to the waves at somewhere like Croyde which can be powerful and fast. Perfect for a beginners foamie surfboard.

If you would rather catch some green waves further out the back, there are great waves to be had along the entire beach! The further you head towards Crow Point the less people you’ll see. (If you prefer solitude why not find your own wave and park at Sandy Lane on Saunton Burrows).
Although Saunton has relatively few strong rips, which makes it safer than other beaches, there is a strong rip right next to the rocks. Stay well clear of this rip. That is, of course, you want to use this ocean conveyor belt to get out the back! Only for the more experienced surfer. A great aid when the waves are larger.
