Roja Marine Fisheries Museum

The Roja Marine Fisheries Museum is one of the most important destinations in Northern Kurzeme, offering a wealth of information on the history of the region and the coastline, its cultural and historical values, the construction of sailing ships, fishing traditions, local residents and the their work and their accomplishments.

The museum was opened in 1968 and currently hosts permanent exhibitions on Krišjānis Valdemārs, the Roja maritime school and the construction of sailing ships in the 19th century.

There is also information on the history of fish processing from the 19th century to the present day, the Liv Shore and Soviet contributions to the development of the coast.

The museum features three Kurzeme women from different historical periods: Mildiņa, who is the simple wife of a fisherman, Mrs Pauliņš from the era of sailing shipbuilding, and Anna Petrovna from the Soviet era.

The three women offer interesting information about objects that are not on display in the museum, also showing the bad sense of humor that people in Kurzeme have.
