Jamie Carragher has named the points tally it will take to win the Premier League title this season.

Manchester City and Arsenal will go head-to-head in a crunch clash at the Etihad on Sunday with huge stakes on the line.

Mikel Arteta's men currently sit top of the table, ahead of Liverpool on goal difference and one point in front of City ahead of the run-in.

And Carragher believes all three sides can't afford to drop many points in their remaining 10 matches of the season.

In his Telegraph column, the former defender wrote: 'For me, 90 points will win the title this season.

If so, the margins are so small that anything more than a couple of draws for one of the contenders will spell the end.

'That’s what makes Sunday so huge.'

Since Leicester City won the league with 81 points in 2016, only twice has the team that won the Premier League finished with fewer than 90 points.

City won the league with 89 points last season as they finished five ahead of Arsenal and needed just 86 points to finish 12 clear of Manchester United in 2021.

Chelsea racked up 93 points to win the title in 2017, while City set a new Premier League when they won the league with 100 points the following season.

Guardiola's men finished on 98 in 2019 as they pipped Liverpool to the post by a single point, before Jurgen Klopp's side stormed to their first title in three decades by accumulating 99 points the following season.

In 2022, City again edged out Liverpool in a close title race, finishing on 93 points to their rivals' 92.

Carragher also believes Arsenal will become favourites to win the title if they beat Manchester City.

'A win at the Etihad would erase any lingering negative assessments of Arsenal,' the 46-year-old said.

'They will be favourites if they beat City as it would give them the confidence to believe they can and should win all their remaining games.'

Arsenal's last victory at the Etihad came nine-years ago when Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud scored in a rare 2-0 win.

The Gunners suffered a damaging 4-1 defeat at the Etihad in April last year in a game that was dubbed a title shootout at the time.

A win on Sunday will see Arteta's men go four points clear of City and currently also have a goal difference that is 11 goals superior.
