History

of the Early Birds Social Golf Club

Originally known as the “Millers Riverwood Early Birds Social Golf Club” formed by friends Athol Veness and Perc Kingsley in 1961 from the grounds of the Riverwood Domino Hotel, where Millers beer was the drink of choice.

In addition to Athol and Perc the original committee consisted of Jack Hoare, Ron Cameron, Kevin Holmes and Don Fox.

During the early 60’s our home course was Bexley. This eventuated due to two of our associates having memberships at Bexley. They could in turn invite three players each to play on a Saturday.

From there we branched.

After discussions with Bexley Golf Course they agreed to allow our social group to tee off at the crack of dawn and hence our name was created, “The Early Birds”.

During the late 60’s our home course moved to East Hills Golf Course, but the issues of tee times never changed. We were still expected to have all our members teed off before day break. It was not rare to have all 20 players on the first hole at the same time to adhere to the rules placed upon us.

In time we booked other courses and our numbers expanded to thirty five members. To this day, the tradition continues. Along with our sole living founding member, Jack Wyres, we also have Ron Boylan, Tony Marsh and Stan Eirth who have been active members since the late 1960’s.

Our 2021 committee invites and welcomes anyone interested in joining our historical club and can assure you that you will be treated just the like the rest of our family.
