About this product

Product Information

Director Bruce Beresford's affinity for the subtleties of southern life is apparent in this adaptation of Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Starring Jessica Tandy as Daisy Werthan and Morgan Freeman as Hoke Colburn, the film opens in late-1940s Atlanta. Since Miss Daisy is becoming a menace behind the wheel, her son, Boolie (Dan Aykroyd), ignores her protests and hires Hoke, a black chauffeur. When the feisty matron decides to resist necessity and walk to the store, the equally stubborn chauffeur follows her in her car. As he says to Boolie, "I used to rassle hogs down to the ground...ain't nary a hog got away from me yet." But Hoke's methods are gentleness and patience, and as the years elapse in his ongoing tug-of-war with the temperamental Daisy, she begins to tacitly acknowledge his wisdom. When she expresses annoyance over the demands of the nascent civil rights movement, Hoke points out to the Jewish woman the similarity between the attack on her synagogue and Klan attacks on black churches. But it is only after many years together that they can finally admit to the depth of the friendship they have shared. The two stars give unforgettable performances, and Beresford's direction is a model of restraint.

The Great Course: The Art of Conflict Management was seen and bought shortly after purchasing another course from vendor. Noted this, and knew it might have been too late to do so, but sent an email asking to combine shipping. It did not really have to be done; however, vendor generously did this and that is what is gratefully appreciated by me. Oh, course was new as described, etc., and is safely in my hands. Kudos to a great vendor and a great transaction. A++++

  • As good as Hollywood ever gets. Period

Schmaltzy, yeah... Beautifully, lovingly, carefully filmed, yeah...nostalgic, yeah... a little idealistic, yeah... Subtly accurate in lots of small details....oh yeah. And perfectly acted on all parts by all parties. This is one of the great films of all time ala A Wonderful Life, Casablanca (HIGH PRAISE from me!), Wizard of Oz, Shall We Dance, Our Man Godfrey, The Music Man...etc. If you don't like any of those, you won't like this one. Reams could be written about Dan Akroyd's surprisingly adept interpretation of his role, about Morgan Freeman's perfection of a "colored man" of the times, and Jessica Tandy's bringing to life of Miss Daisy. This is one of my all time favourites, and always will be. Even though I cry a little at the end.

  • Excellent DVD, like new....

One of my favorite movies.... It is like new....I love movies with Morgan Freeman in them and Jessica Tandy. They work well together. Although the subject of how black Americans were treated back in the 1930's and up until now, was terrible, I like how the friendship forms and I have never actually noticed a person skin color prior to the way they smile or greet you. I'm glad the feelings of how I was raised have finally transformed most American's towards all human beings. This movie is an excellent story, has a lot of truth to it, but am very glad that is not how people are treated anymore in the 2000's. We are all human beings.

  • good movie----- can watch it with your kids, without worry

love the movie----- great car scenes
