A simple yet highly effective tool for making sauerkraut, kimchi, or other fermented pickles or vegetables. It easily fits the opening of all Mason jars, with one end being 1.75" in diameter and the other end 1.25", with a length of 10". They are also suitable as muddlers for mixing your favourite cocktail or for crushing fresh or dried herbs. The tampers are available in a variety of hardwoods as shown and all come from locally sourced, reclaimed trees. The tampers are sanded to 1200 grit and are finished with a protective mineral oil and beeswax finish.
Add a 10 ml container of my home made wood butter to renew the finish if the tamper starts to dry out after repeated washings. I make my wood butter from pure beeswax and food grade mineral oil.
Every piece I create is hand turned on a lathe in my own studio. It all begins with a carefully selected, locally sourced log, cut with a chain saw into suitable sizes for the specific item it will be used for. Occasionally, I will use exotic wood for special applications - always purchased from a reputable supplier. Although each piece of wood offers its own surprises once it is turned, when looking for wood I am drawn to unique pieces with character, such as spalting, burls, highly figured grain patterns or crotches. When working with green or wet wood, the wood blank is turned into the rough shape on the lathe, followed by a 3-6 month slow drying process to prevent the wood from developing cracks or splits. Once dried, the piece is remounted on the lathe and turned to its final shape. I take great care in sanding and finishing every item I make, going well beyond the usual 400 - 600 grit sanding to 1000 grit or higher, depending on the piece. Unless otherwise noted, all my pieces are then finished with a natural and food-safe oil or oil/wax finish that preserves and protects the natural beauty of the wood and imparts a silky-smooth feel.
The journey from tree to finished piece is a lengthy one and requires both skill and patience to arrive at the piece shown here. If you purchase an item from Butternut Ridge, you can be assured of a very high-quality finish that is sure to impress.
