This is a landscape ready and hardened off, ADULT plant that can fend for itself in a harsh garden environment.
THE GRASS BLADES WILL BE CUT BACK SOME FOR SHIPPING DUE TO BEING CLOSE TO 3.5 FOOT TALL in the active growing season. During dormancy from 1st frost to the end of March, the grass will be shipped with no fresh, green growth or with the grass blades just starting to emerge.
Hardiness zones: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
To reiterate: plant blades will be cut back some for shipping.
Silver Grass is an ornamental perennial with gracefully arching leaves. The light variegation gets more beautiful the older the grass gets.
Sun: full sun to partial shade
Soil requirements: sandy soil, clay, loam, silt.
Height: 3 to 3.5 feet in the first year if the grass receives adequate water.
Fertilizer: not necessary but growth can be promoted by giving an average dose of nitrogen fertilizer.
Water requirements: water frequently until the newly planted Silver Grass is established, then water when the top 2 inch of soil have dried. IF you plant in fall or winter water only moderately so the plant can establish itself.
Mulch: Silver Grass loves mulch and will grow rapidly surrounded by a 3-4 inch mulch layer. Do NOT put the mulch on top of the grass.
Uses/Benefits: heat tolerant, wildlife resistant, cut plumes, privacy screen, cheerful color, focus point, center piece in flower bed, border around property.
Pair with: Roses, non-invasive Bamboo, Canna, Vitex agnus castus, anything that blooms, lighten up uni-green parts of your garden. !
