The Scafidi/Scafide/Scaffidi family name is one that is rare. The name origin is likely derived from a Greek word with definitions that extend from first, a “habitational name for someone from any of the many places in Greece, Southern Italy, and Sicily named for medieval Greek skafidion meaning ‘trough’, ‘tub’, ‘kneading trough’, ‘drinking trough for animals’. Second, Skaphidion also means ‘skiff’, ‘light boat’, and in some cases this may be an occupational name for a boatman. Or lastly, “possibly a habitational name for someone from a place named Scafa, in particular a district so named in Capo d’Orlando in Messina, Sicily.” (Ancestry.Com) Within Italy and Sicily, the unaltered name would be Scafidi. Upon arrival in the U.S, some anglicized the name to Scafide. The highest concentration of Scafidi’s live in the area of Palermo province on the island of Sicily. The concentration of Scafidi’s on Sicily correlates with the heavy Greek influence on the island prior to the Punic wars and the conquest of the Romans. However, the name does not persist on main land Greece. This leads to the thought that Scafidi may be a name that is native to the island of Sicily. Further, if this is the case, there is a great possibility that most Scafidi’s may be related in the recent past.
