The Right Honourable Cavalier (Chief) Festus Remilekun Ayodele Marinho, Papal Knight of St Sylvester, Officer of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, was born on the 30th of December, 1934 in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State to Gregory Latunde and Janet Idowu .

He began his Primary School, education in Kaduna and Jos in the Northern Region of Nigeria  completing his secondary school education at St Gregory’s College, Obalende, Lagos. He graduated from the University College, Ibadan in June, 1960 with a Bachelor of Science, (Special Honours) Physics (London) degree and obtained a postgraduate Diploma of Imperial College, London in Petroleum Reservoir Engineering in 1961.

In 1960, just before Nigeria’s independence, Chief Marinho joined the then Hydrocarbons Section of the Ministry of Mines and Power and Lagos Affairs . He rose rapidly ultimately becoming the pioneer and two-time Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation 1977-80 and 1984-85.

Chief Marinho was at the forefront of  the development of policies and practices in the Petroleum Industry in Nigeria shaping the development of the industry, from the time of the declaration of the country as an Oil Province with initial production of about 50,000 barrels a day to its established potential of more than 2.5 million barrels, at his retirement. He championed the Nigerianisation of the industry and is credited with providing a pathway within the industry to many

His service threw up many challenges notably when in December 1975 he was part of Nigeria’s delegation to Opec in Vienna who were taken hostage by the terrorist Carlos the Jackal. In his inimitable way he struck up a rapport with the terrorist leader culminating in Carlos handing him what apparently was “his bullet” on the release of the hostages.

A devout Catholic , his faith took prominence throughout his life . His service to the church was recognised in 2002 when he was made a Papal Knight of St Sylvester . He is a member of the National Council of the Catholic Charismatic Movement of Nigeria and the first Editor of the Movement’s magazine “Glory” and its newsletter.

A philanthropist , he supported numerous charities and civic initiatives .His civic contributions saw him honoured traditionally as Esere of Uvwie and the Aro Olofin of Ijebu-Ife.

Chief Marinho is the author of many published technical papers and books including his autobiography: Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry: A Maverick Pioneer, a Recollection of my Life, Times and Contributions to Nigeria’s Prosperity and Reflections on the Nigerian Oil Industry.

His many awards and honours include : Officer of the Federal Republic of Nigeria , the Chief Feyide Gold Medal for services to the Petroleum Industry in Africa. The Nigerian Petroleum Golden Jubilee Award and the Nigerian Energy Chronicle Oil and Gas Hall of Fame.

He is survived by Chief (Mrs.) Yetunde Oreoluwa Marinho, whom he married in 1960 , five  children fourteen grandchildren , a great grandchild , brothers and sisters .

I recently received a compilation of tributes dedicated to FRAM (Chief Festus Remilekun Ayodele Marinho), sent to me by my sister, Yetunde Ibidapo Situ. FRAM played a pivotal role in advancing Nigeria's oil and gas industry, earning him the title of "Mr. First." His dedication and hard work resulted in the successful completion of numerous projects, including refineries and petrochemical/gas plants.

I have fond memories of spending time with him and Mr. Adekunle Kukoyi during Christmas and New Year parties at his residence in Ikoyi. These gatherings were marked by insightful discussions about national issues and shared optimism for the development and future of Nigeria.

My admiration for FRAM is unwavering because he was not only approachable and open but also genuinely caring. He consistently inquired about one's well-being, activities, and offered assistance, creating a strong desire to visit him. This connection persisted even after my relocation overseas.

FRAM's life philosophy centered on integrity, honor, and trust in the Lord, principles that undoubtedly guided him throughout his remarkable journey. He left his mark and made a difference yet full of humility. I thank the Lord for a life well lived and for an amazing wife, Mummy Y. Marinho and those amazing children.

Chief F R A Marinho is not someone to be forgotten so easily. In August 1985 while the relationship between him and Prof. Tam David West has broken down irretrievably, I had a discussion with him as one of his personal staffs suggesting he should resign and he exclaimed "Mudele you wanted my friends to abandoned me?" I do not have any money anywhere if I should resigned my friends would assumed I am loaded with stolen oil money. I quickly retrieved my suggestion as he told me he knew he would be retired but he was not going to give in to their blackmail.Chief Marinho was a living husband, a loving father, a down to earth Boss, a Christian to the core and an indefatigable technocrat. As I remember him today may God ALMIGHTY forgive him his earthly sins, may his soul continuously rest in the heavenly kingdom and may God ALMIGHTY preserve his aged wife, the children, grandchildren, great grandchildren left behind and may his memory and legacies remain evergreen Amen

“It’s your birthday, but it doesn’t feel like it without you here. No wahala; because I am still going to wish you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY. I know that’s what you would have wanted.”

Wow Dad one year on,
Over the year in which you passed on, reviewing the precious moments we spent together over the years, the precious legacy you left us with, the tributes and good will of kit and kin and indeed all those you crossed paths with, on your sojourn on earth, we have fondly thought of you and missed you. The recollections have been golden, especially for me and my family. From the days of my birth, when your annually celebrated. the day of our birth and entrance into your life and the Marinho family and which continued throughout your life, even to the present day, from your abode in heaven. We feel your presence and presents, all around us every day. You were and are indeed a blessing, and your blessed memory lingers on, in our hearts and minds.
Visiting with mummy, she reminisces of the wonderful, loving, caring, giving, selfless and righteous man, she met and fell in love with, so many years ago. In her reflections, she daily blesses your name as she says, “God bless Festus Marinho, wherever you are in God’s universe!” Indeed, may your soul rest in perfect peace, Amen. We know you are perpetually in the presence of God, the everlasting father, comforting her always. Thankyou dad.
Personally, my family and I, are so grateful to God, for giving us, such an exemplary gem, for a Dad. You nurtured, guided, corrected, supported and loved us unconditionally. As children, we did not always understand your ways, but as the years rolled by, we have come to see you were right, in all the guidance, chiding, rebukes, foresight and insights you gave us, through the years. we thank God, you are finally receiving, the just reward for all your labors of love on our behalf, in the bosom of Abraham.
In retrospect, thinking back to the last times we spent together, before you departed to the Lord in Glory, we see you were ready to meet Him. Indeed, you told us you were ready to go, and we thank the Lord for preparing you and transitioning you so gently and swiftly, without much suffering, into his glorious presence.
Finally, our prayer today, is for you to always intercede for us and bless us from heaven, in God’s eternal presence, as we endeavor to keep untarnished, the legacy you left us with. That the Lord will continue to comfort and keep Mummy in his love and care, with good health, a long life and prosperity always. May the lord continue to console us all, and help us build on the precious and wonderful legacy, you left us and our children with in perpetuity.
Daddy we Thank you for everything you did for us all, we love you for who you were to us and we bless you and your blessed memory, now and always Amen, and Amen.
Continue to Rest in Perfect Peace.

This poem reminds me so much of Uncle and his passion to help others.

I shall not pass this way again

I expect to pass through this world but once;
any good thing therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show to any fellow-creature,
let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

Bro, (as I used to call you) I will really miss you! You have touched my life with your exemplary life of kindness, humility and love of God! I recall how accessible you made yourself to all (as a managing director of the NNPC) especially those in need regardless of their status. I remember when I wanted to visit the US for first time in 1985 and confided in you that I might not be given a visa because that was my first time to travel out of Nigeria, you offered to give me a letter of introduction to the embassy; you did, and I was given the visa.
As a man who loved and served God, you delighted in attending prayer vigils and other Christian events even as a managing director with tight schedules.
In your time before your retirement, you employed many seeking employment in NNPC; many of whom have retired today and are receiving good pensions.
Thank you Bro, for all you have done to make life better for others. May your gentle soul Rest In Peace. Amen!

TRIBUTE TO GRANDPA FRA MARINHO

“Grandpa”, I can’t believe I am writing this for others to read except you.

You were a such a wonderful grandfather to my siblings; Modupe, Aanuoluwapo and myself. Every time we visited you at Tiamiyu Savage, we were never in a hurry to leave. I remembered my stay with you and “grandma” during my Industrial attachment at Oceanography; and then I saw you dressed with fully regaliated knight outfit, I rushed to grab my camera and took several shots and what amused me was the posture you gave and kept changing for me to have my shots. I can’t forget those moments.

Still at Oceanography, I lacked nothing. Even when you moved to Treasure Gardens, you permitted me to remain in the house till I finished my attachment. You were so kind, generous and disciplined. Your attention to details was second to none and that is something I have held on to till date.

I could remember how you prayed for my newly wedded wife and I after our wedding few months ago. Then in January 2021, you called my wife and I to wish us a happy new year after missing our calls and really prayed for us, we didn’t know it was the last.

Your commitment and service to God has continued to encourage me and I will not forget in a hurry.

We might grieve, but our consolation is in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14, “...we are not ignorant as those who have no hope, because we know you are asleep...for we believe Jesus Christ died and rose, and so He will also raise you up to God” (paraphrased).

We are celebrating the life you have lived. Sleep on “Grandpa”, till we meet at the Lord’s feet.

CHIEF FESTUS REMILEKUN AYODELE MARINHO, O.F.R, DIC, KSS
REMINISCES

It is indeed a difficult task to write a Tribute to someone who had been extremely close – a friend and Brother for more than half a century. It is even more difficult when providence unexpectedly intervenes to determine such close relationship. That is the dilemma in which I find myself in trying to recall my interaction with Chief Festus Remilekun Ayodele Marinho (FRA) as well as his achievements and contributions towards the economic development of our dear country Nigeria.

Born in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria on December 30, 1934. Product of Family of Lagos Brazilian retunees. FRA’s primary education was mainly in Lagos but, I believe also partly in Kaduna, Jos and possibly, some Eastern part of Nigeria as well by virtue of his father’s employment in the Postal Service. On his return to Lagos with his parents, his family took up residence at Inabere Street, Lagos which is in the same vicinity as our own home and, which initiated the communication between our two families.

Thanksfully, his secondary education was in the glorious and prestigious St. Gregory’s College, Obalende, Lagos. I was some years ahead of him in St. Gregory’s which by tradition of the institution at that time did not envisage much contact between seniors and juniors which accordingly provided little opportunity for interaction throughout our time in St. Gregory’s. But, as we say ‘’Once a Gregorian, always a Gregorian’’ and that relationship survived well after both of us returned to Nigeria after further studies in the United Kingdom.

It was my curiosity regarding the oil industry that I was thinking of participating in that brought me close to FRA. I remember calling him on the phone one afternoon early in 1972 to ask him to explain to me the term ‘’posted price’’ which was a term used in the early sixties to determine oil price levels. FRA went into a detailed explanation but I must confess that I can no longer recall what ‘’posted price’’ means anymore.

From then, it was a continuing dialogue as to the organisation and operations of the oil companies in Nigeria and the industry as a whole.
In fact, I had focused my mind on joining Shell Nigeria from where I had had an informal approach on which I consulted a childhood friend, then a Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service at that time who rather than assist me in my quest went into a rather lengthy explanation of the extent of involvement of a finance officer in the oil industry which he himself had always admired and felt better qualified than anybody else for such a post. Of course, I took the hint that I had approached an interested adviser and from then contained myself by focussing on other area of business for the future.

FRA and I developed close ties and we interacted regularly not only on matters affecting our various pursuits but also on other matters of family. I am happy to put on record that FRA and my dear sister, his adorable wife Yetunde, Yeye Aro Olofin were Godparents of one of my daughters Ibidunni and we share common interests in many areas of life.

FRA was an absolutely honest and dependable Brother. A very purposeful, decisive and forward looking administrator. The way he successfully pioneered the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC) at which he was the first Managing Director which up till the time of this tribute has been the mainstay of the Nigerian economy is a testimony to his flawless performance.
I could recall that FRA was part of the delegation that visited Italy in the early days of the first Military regime where they had a meeting with the founder of the Ente Nationale Idrecarburi (E.N.I). the celebrated Enrico Mattei who enlightened the Nigerian delegation on the need for Nigeria to insist on production sharing when negotiating exploration and participation arrangements with oil companies. It will be recorded that up to the time of Nigeria’s independence in 1960, the main oil exploration company in the country was Shell. That was the starting point of oil exploration and production sharing that now obtains in the country till today!

It was also during FRA’s time that Nigeria initiated work on the National Gas Exploration Project for Export which is now handled by the Nigerian LNG.

This started with the first four (4) wells in Otuorogu drilled and developed by Saipem Nigeria Limited. The benefit of that initial effort is still being reaped today.
A lot of encouragement was given to other exploration companies such as Mobil, Agip, Elf, Phillips etc which enabled them to expand their operations during FRA’s tenure as Managing Director of NNPC.
A team of very bright, professionally qualified and visionary Nigerians drawn from all parts of the country without any bias of ethnicity, religion or background notably Peter Amanechi, Fadejimi Bademosi, S.A. Kufeji, Greg Ero, Chambers Oyibo, Gilbert Grant, Dalhatu Bayero, Odoliyi Lolomari, , Dr. Thomas John, Sam Akpe, Funso Kupolokun, Alex Nwokedi, Jackson Gaius-Obaseki, Chief Sena Anthony to name a few were trained and all performed and produced results based on proper guidance by FRA. Nigeria should be proud of him.
I have no recollection of FRA’s participation in athletics but, he was adept in the game of chess. I could recall that sometime ago when he led the Nigerian delegation to a meeting of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in Vienna and the bulk of the delegates was the subject of a ‘kidnap’ by an international terrorist gang led by a character named Carlos. In the course of their being transported by air with the terrorists, FRA had a game of chess with the notorious Carlos in which I am sure he did not fare badly. Perhaps that accounted for his being released in Algiers with a few of his kidnapped colleagues without harm!

I could also recall on one occasion in a chess duel with an electronic gadget when, presumably after making a move which was obviously unexpected by the gadget, he heard a voice yelling ‘’you win, you win’’. You could imagine his glee when he narrated this to me.

The irony of all this is that FRA never reckoned on jealousy from within and outside the NNPC during his tenure. He had to go through the unfortunate and inexplicable scenario of the US$2.8billion ‘Oilgate’ scam which generated a Commission of Enquiry, chaired by the eminent Justice Ayo Irikefe during which FRA and all the Heads of the NNPC were sent on compulsory leave until the end of the exercise when they were all cleared officially and the Government of Alhaji Shehu Shagari was directed by thewas directed by the Commission of Enquiry to reinstate them. But, the Government acting through the Vice-President, the Late Arc. Alex Ekwueme recalled all the suspended officers of the NNPC except FRA who remained suspended until after the advent of General Muhammed Buhari, as Military Head of State when he was reinstated as Managing Director of the NNPC. But, that did’nt generate any bitterness or rancour from FRA as he left everything to destiny!

During the Military Government of General Ibrahim Babaginda , FRA disagreed with the then Minister of Petroleum Resources, the Late Prof. Tam David-West on several administrative matters as well as some proposal to allow a foreign company to lift Nigerian oil by barter on which FRA disagreed and for which, he was retired and given seven (7) days to quit his official quarters (residence). He was neither saddened nor unduely bothered as he was confident that he was right and acting on Nigeria’s best interest.

FRA forgave the Honourable Minister and all his detractors their trespassers.

It is not my intention to make this a long Tribute but, it is important to recall some of the achievements of this eminent and unique Nigerian who has done so much for his fatherland and for which Nigeria bestowed on him the National Merit Award of ‘Officer of the Federal Republic’ (O.F.R) which I believe is much less than he deserved. If there is room for a higher posthumous award, I sincerely implore our authorities to take note!

FRA has gone but his good deeds and contributions to Nigeria’s economic development as well as his many efforts towards improvement in education particularly as a Trustee of the Dominican University of Nigeria and his invaluable imput in the prosecution of his faith, particularly his close ties with The Church of Divine Mercy, Lekki, the Catholic Friendly Society No. 3619. His Holiness, The Pope recognised FRA’s unshaken faith in His Maker and bestowed on him the Papal Knight Medal of St. Sylvester which gave him great satisfaction.
FRA had utmost respect for the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR and President Muhammed Buhari GCFR who was the Minister of Petroleum Resources during his tenure as Managing Director of the NNPC. His other friends in the petroleum industry included the Late Chief Popo Balogun, The Bale of Lasigun of Blessed Memory, the former Chairman of Arewa Forum, the Late Chief Sunday Bolorunduro Awoniyi.

I was tickle-pink with the gratuitous comments and encomium showered on me in his autobiography – ‘’Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry: A Maverick Pioneer’’ which I recommend as a good reference book for all students of the Hydrocarbon industry. I read the book only recently even though it was published some ten years ago by Macmillan Nigeria Publishers Ltd of which I am Chairman. I have never been more flattered.
I conclude this memoir by wishing my departed friend and Brother ‘Happy Landing’!

A loving tribute to my Nana's wonderful brother, 'Big Grandpa' - as my brother and I called him.

'Big Grandpa' you were an important and cherished figure in our lives; from being a strong and dependable presence when were all young to becoming an unwavering and encouraging pillar of support and wisdom as we all grew older. As the eldest amongst my cousins, we go as far back as you bringing your joy and love when you attended and performed my naming ceremony, as well as bringing your laughter and kind soul to Timi's confirmation.

It was always such a delight to see you and 'Big Grandma' again at other memorable events such as Uncle Mike's wedding, Auntie Catherine's wedding, and other family gatherings. I will deeply treasure the time we were able to spend together, and it will now hold a special place in my heart.

May God provide love and comfort for 'Big Grandma', all the children and grandchildren, all the family, and anyone who had the pleasure of knowing you - your light will always shine bright, and the memories of our time together will be a constant source of strength and happiness for many years to come.

May you rest easy in God's grace and love. Amen.

I called him Daddy because he took on the burden of fatherhood for me and my siblings. He was a great man with the strength of a giant and the loving heart of a saint. He never hesitated to reach out to assist the weak and had no time at all for airs and pretentious living.
Our lives were blessed by his kindness and there can be no words to thank Daddy and the entire Marinho family for all the care.
He has transited to a higher realm of glory and certainly is with The Lord whom he served in truth and reality. The best we can do to remember him is to follow his example and live a life of honesty, love and selfless service to God and man.
Farewell Daddy. We miss you too much for words.

Was a very short encounter: was one of the Doctors that treated him, Oh!!! what a wonderful man.
Made every encounter hassle free, very intelligent and engaging. I've treated lots of prominent patients who are rude and needs the Medical team to know who and what they are. Never knew his status or portfolio and was stunned the day I saw his autobiography.

You left a lasting impression on me and taught me by your behaviour how people of class and affluence should behave and relate with others.

Although a doctor, the news of your demise left me speechless and caused tears to flow.

I already miss you and believe you are resting in the Bossom of our Lord Jesus Christ, till we see to part no more

Writing a tribute about Chief Remi Marinho is a colossal assignment, for there is hadly any sphere of life he had not touched our lives or people we are closely familiar with.
As family he was there for everyone without exception.
As a mentor, he did not spare any and all efforts.
As a professional, he left no one in doubt. Within minutes of conversation, one recognizes his immense depth and intellect.
As an elite, his knowledge and wisdom knew no bounds. He was a writer's encyclopedia.
Brother Remi as fondly regarded within the family will always show up at all family gatherings. When he was GMD of NNPC, it always perplexed me how he found time to support family members with his resources and presence.
Baba Olu boy, cared for his children and grandchildren in exceptional ways beyond anyone's imagination. He was father to the fatherless.
In marriage, he demonstrated to all the true meaning of wedlock committed on love and trust. He showed sincere closeness to his wife.
His love for people was unfathomable.
Chief Remi Marinho's memory will remain evergreen in our hearts.
His legacy will certainly endure.
The following will probably be on his epitaph: Chief Remi Marinho lived a life worthy of emulation; a life of profound humility as a disciple of Christ in the service of humanity.
Sade, the children and I will continue to cherish your fondness. We love you sir.
Rest with the Lord.
Tayo & Sade Odusanya.
Rejoice always.

Chief FRA Marinho was my Godfather when i was baptised at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church and also my sponsor when I got married.
I remember how he rushed down to church when i had some issues with my marriage classes before my wedding day and how he stayed till the issue was resolved. Infact he told the priest he won't leave till they resolved it, I would never forget his impact that day .
Grandpa Marinho was loving, kind, generous and brilliant. I am glad he was my Godfather and he was someone i could look up to .
You would be missed sir ,we love you but God loves you more.
May His gentle Soul Rest in Peace.

It was with great shock that I learnt of the transition to glory of Chief Festus Marinho on 18 January 2021. Chief Festus Marinho was a man of peace, integrity, forthrightness, fairness and compassion. He was humble and respected all people he came in contact with regardless of their age and status. He never took anyone for granted.
He was not aquisitive by nature and very contented with what God gave him. He was a genuine person with such a beautiful soul and large heart. He faced life's challenges with confidence and faith in God.Indeed God gave him the grace to excel in life.
I pray that the Almighty God will console, strengthen and uphold his loving wife ( sisi mi) and give her and other family members he left behind the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Rest in the bosom of the Lord.

Dear Grandpa,
Your sudden and unexpected passing away has been such a shock to us, were we not laughing together a few weeks ago while on the phone? As usual, you made me smile and laugh, I am going to miss your laugh so much! You have always been so supportive, caring and loving with all of us. Always remembering special events in our lives, congratulating and supporting your grand children for any achievement they made, however big or small, and always checking up on us to make sure we were all fine. I will never forget your love, your warmth, your support, your caring attitude, your generosity and your irresistible laughter, you were truly larger than life. I felt, as we got to know each other, that there was this special complicity with one another, but I know this was one of your many special gifts, to give someone your undivided attention and show them you cared and were genuinely interested in their feelings and thoughts. You were the most charismatic person I have ever met and I am so proud and grateful you were in my life, and will always be.
Joy is the word that comes to mind when I think of you, I shall miss your extraordinarily entertaining stories, I could have listened to you for hours... I can still hear your voice and it warms my heart. You have left us too soon and too suddenly, we were not ready, I know no one can ever be ready for the loss of a dear one but It comforts me to know you are still watching over us. I would like to pass on my sincere condolences to your closest family and especially to Grandma, your other half and your children and siblings. You will be so missed Grandpa but never forgotten. May you rest in peace. Sandrine

TRIBUTE TO CHIEF F.R.A. MARINHO OF BLESSED MEMORY
I met Chief Marinho for the first time on May 1, 1970 when as a young Secondary School graduate (Higher School Certificate), I was searching for a job. I was referred to the late Chief Feyide of the then Federal Ministry of Mines and Power, Petroleum Division at the 6-story building, Broad Street, Lagos. After seeing Chief Feyide, he referred me to Chief Marinho in his Office. As soon as he looked at my CV, he advised and encouraged me that if I am employed, I should stay because the young industry was searching for young people with my type of qualification. He also promised that if I stay, the organisation will train me. I took his promise and got employed as an Assistant Technical Officer (A.T.O) in training. In 1973, Chief Marinho ensured that the promise he made to me three years earlier was fulfilled when I was sent on an in-service training to Japan. It was clearly a promise made and fulfilled by a man of great integrity. Throughout my stay in Japan, Chief Marinho monitored my progress and ensured that my sponsors - the Japan Petroleum Company fulfilled all their obligations to me until I graduated from the University.
Whatever I achieved in the industry until I retired from service in 2005 was the result of the fulfilment of the promise Chief Marinho made to me in 1970 and which was fulfilled. He will be remembered as one of the early great architects who contributed to the massive growth of the petroleum industry but also as a Prophet who had a vision to train young Nigerians as the drivers of the industry growth in Nigeria. He will be truly missed and cherished forever.
I join everyone who trained and worked under him to send our heartfelt condolences to his widow, children, grandchildren and other members of his family on his passage to greater glory. May our faith in God and the memories of the good times spent with him give everyone the strength to bear the irreparable loss. May his legacies stay strong and indelible forever.
Remembered with fond memories by Doherty Olukayode Oloketuyi.

Days have passed, since you left and joined the angels of God. As for me, a lot of things have changed on the way i perceived life. I'm having hard time looking at the path you once trailed . Sometimes, i found myself in the realm of happiness but my awareness becomes instantly visited by sorrow and sadness whenever i remember you. I can see you everywhere and almost anywhere. You resembled all the good things that God has given to this wonderful world. From the very simple of other fathers i can see your face. I cannot forget the last time you indirectly bid me farewell.... a day before that fateful tragedy.

THE GLORIOUS EXIT OF A TITAN
TRIBUTE TO CHIEF FESTUS REMILEKUN ABIODUN MARINHO

Writing a tribute for the death of one's father is a difficult thing. Thoughts are distorted by feelings and words become frozen in emotions. Although Ecclesiastes 7 vs 2 reminds us that death is the destiny of every person, nothing can ever prepare a son for the death of his father. As death is the path that ends an earthly journey, a man's remembrance is indeed the greatest legacy of his life.

Circumstances of life brought me very close to Chief FRA Marinho (“Chief Marinho”). On January 12, 1984, Chief Marinho was reappointed as the managing director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (“NNPC”). At that time, I was among the personal staff of the then outgoing Managing Director (“MD”) of NNPC, Engineer L.A.O Amu. I signed for and collected the letter and delivered it at No 12, Milverton Road, Ikoyi, the official residence of the NNPC MD. Considering the humiliation that Chief Marinho was subjected to as a result of the baseless and politically motivated N2.8billion oil scandal, those of us in the MD’s office had envisaged that our period in the MD’s office had come to an end.

Alas! To our consternation Chief Marinho did not only retain us to work with him, he also retained all the managers in the MD's office. In addition, he offered an olive hand to those who instigated the N2.8 billion oil scandal...the entitled class who felt that the NPN/NPP accord at the federal level should translate into making one of them the MD of NNPC. At that time, the decision to retain us was quite unusual and could only have been taken by a very religious person who dedicated his life entirely to God Almighty. This was a decision that could only have been taken by Chief Marinho and Chief Marinho alone because in a politically charged environment with a lot of back stabbing as in the then NNPC, to the faint hearted it was a suicidal decision. Through my working relationship with Chief Marinho, I quickly realized that he was a man who was absolutely contented with what God had given to him.

I remember vividly Monday, 31st December 1984 at 12noon when Chief Marinho left the office and asked that we should close the office and meet him at home. When we arrived in his house, he directed the females among us i.e Mrs. Oluremi Obende and Mrs. Cole to join his wife in decorating the house with the various cards that accompanied a mountain of gifts that came from various companies and individuals. On the other hand, the men including Chief Marinho, late Okoro. N. Okoro, late Banji Oyelade, Mr. Aqua and myself sat in the living room drinking and merrying in anticipation of the coming new year as well as celebrating Chief Marinho's birthday which took place a day before i.e 30th December 1984.

After eating and drinking, Chief Marinho led all of us into a very large room where all the gifts were kept and he said and I quote "gentlemen and ladies these are the reward of our joint effort in the outgoing year, please divide it equally and let everyone take his/her portion home to enjoy with his/her family". We were all stunned in disbelief having all worked with two former MD’s. It had never happened and it would probably never repeat itself again in the history of NNPC. It was Chief Marinho that could be so large hearted.

By a letter SFMG.3/VOL.11/518 dated October 2, 1985, Chief Marinho and four others were retired on the ground of public interest effective three days earlier and Chief Aret Adams became GMD of NNPC. Chief Aret Adams could not operate immediately from the office of the MD because ascendancy was not only treacherous but a complete betrayal. My relationship with Chief Marinho continued post retirement until the last day as we communicated through WhatsApp messages and I also visited him occasionally at home.

Adieu my Father, my Mentor and my Big Boss. Rest in peace until we meet to part no more.

S.A MUDELE.

PRESIDENT, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA
Muhammadu Buhari

I write to express my heartfelt condolence on the passage of a noted Oil and Gas Executive, Chief Festus Marinho, whom I worked with in the industry for many years.
Chief Marinho was Managing Director of Nigerian National Oil Corporation (NNOC), which was the forerunner of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). He became pioneer Group Managing Director of NNPC, where he proved his mettle as a skilled and knowledgeable person. No wonder he served twice, 1977-1979, and 1984-1985.
As Minister for Petroleum for over three years, I served closely with the late Marinho. He was brought back under my time as military head of state. I found him resourceful and hard working.
I pray that God rests his soul, and comfort the family he left behind.

Dear Daddy,

It's with a heavy heart that I write this tribute. It's so surreal that you are no longer here with us but we take solace in the legacy that you have left behind. We will cherish the memories of the devotion, love, wisdom, strength, and integrity with which you served your family, friends, church, community, and our nation Nigeria.

You were a doting husband to mummy, a loving father, and an amazing Grandpa. You made it a point of duty whenever you were in town to be present at every performance, game, track meet, in any and every event that involved The Children. Birthdays were never complete without a call and song from you and mummy. We will miss your witty sense of humor and interesting stories from all your adventures in life. We will miss you but we are comforted because your legacy lives on. We know it's not Goodbye but Goodnight.

Rest on Daddy.

TRIBUTE TO A LOVING FATHER

Dear Daddy, you might have left us but the wonderful memories of you will forever remain in my heart. Your sudden death came to me as a devastating shock. I remember like yesterday, sitting on the sofa by your bedside for hours as you recount your incredible life history and personal experiences from your university days to retirement. I remember like yesterday, your word to mummy as you were about to step out of your bedroom heading to the hospital…….” Do not miss me too much, see my going away as one of those my trips to Abuja…. I will be back tomorrow” then you parted with a consoling hug.

I recall so vividly our conversations and the laughter that followed as we rode together to the hospital. Throughout our ride, you were so full of life, which gave me so much hope and succour that you would be well in no time and be back home, but God in his infinite wisdom knows best.

You were not just like a beloved father but also a great mentor and a pillar of support to me and many others irrespective of their tribe or religion. You are a good man who lived an exemplary and exceptional life. I learnt so much from you. You taught us so much on our responsibilities and to face life with whatever it brings with a smile and a heart that sings. It has indeed been the honour of my life to have you, Dear Big Daddy.

I will miss you and your honest fatherly advice, as sad as your departure makes me feel, you brighten up today and tomorrow with all the joy, laughter and the good memories that we captured. I take comfort in the fact that you are resting in the LORD.

Daddy, Rest in perfect peace.

Tribute to my uncle.
(It’s unbelievable that I am using the past tense for you.). Uncle FRA, as you were fondly called, you were a precious, exquisite and treasured uncle that I am proud to have been related to you and to have been affectionately loved so deeply.
On behalf of my mother, your eldest sibling, Matilda Adeoti of blessed memory, this is to celebrate rather than mourn your passage to glory in grand style, for a life well spent.
You demonstrated over the years that there was no limit to kindness and generosity. What will persist when everyone disappear are the sterling qualities of love and selflessness to numerous beneficiaries of your largesse. The home was a Jerusalem of warmest welcome where all aggrieved who came in tears left with smiles-these qualities are imbibed by the children.
You were a colossus, one in a million years in the family...ah,k'a to r'erin o digbo.....adieu, my great uncle, sleep on in the blossom of the Lord.
PS., I vividly and incredibly recall your telephone chat with me on Jan 3rd 2021 advising me to stay safe and greetings to Dolapo & Helen, my sibling not knowing that the parting was well made.

...A LOVING FATHER
Words are not enough to describe how much I missed catching a glimpse at your loving face and behold your charming smile before you left. I greatly desired to visit but, the trouble of the pandemic kept us away from the so-elderly for too long and then, the protests around Lekki axis!
Fond memories of few times of visit to your palatial home never leaves my mind. Can't forget one of such where we both watched the television and your exclamation at the mien of the former American President, Bill Clinton ... " look at his civility". You were such a lover of responsible people because your were one yourself.
Adieu, dear loving father!

I loved dropping in on Daddy to have warm conversation. I believe we shared a mutual understanding that I was some form of human pulse reader he could use to gauge the progression or regression of the Nigerian Oil giant he pioneered.
I always remember a particular conversation we had a couple of years ago. In the course of our conversation Daddy mentioned dividends he received and jokingly said he quickly distributed it to his kids and dependents . The large smile on his face prompted my question..”Sir, why did you do it so fast? “
His answer still lingers in my mind till this moment. He replied “I don’t want to leave this world suddenly and have God ask me why I stored so much in my account when people are living in poverty all around.”
That simple statement said with his smile has defined my thinking.
