Science-Backed Natural
Choices for Allergies (^Top)
By Eric Spinner, CNC
An amazing 40 million Americans suffer with
allergies. Many people deal with runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, and
itchy throats due to seasonal hay fever allergies in spring and fall. For
some people these symptoms are a yearlong struggle due to molds, dust mites,
and animal dander as well. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and
Immunology, estimates that over 16 million office visits a year are
attributed to allergic rhinitis (allergies), with costs totaling over $6
billion.
Allergy sufferers may choose from prescription
drugs, OTC drugs, and natural supplements. Many of the prescription drugs
and OTC drugs have an array of side effects, which may make consumers
hesitate to try them, and Doctors hesitate to prescribe them. Many natural
choices contain the herb Ephedra, which is controversial in its side
effects. Ephedra based products are not the only available choice, and new
and promising scientific research on an array of natural remedies provides
safe and effective choices for allergic individuals.
MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), an organic sulfur compound found in all plants
and animals, has been the subject of a recent multi centered study for
seasonal allergies. The study involved 42 people with allergies to grass,
weeds, fungi, trees and shrubs, and was conducted in the spring to ensure
high levels of airborne allergens. Each person took 2600mg of OptiMSM for 30
days and was monitored every 7 days. By day 7, total upper respiratory
symptoms were significantly reduced, and this continued through day 30.
Lower respiratory symptoms improved by day 21 and continued to improve by
day 30. Energy levels also significantly improved by day 14 and continued to
improve through day 30.
Aller-7 - a combination of seven Ayurvedic herbs
used for centuries in Indian traditional medicine- has been in research for
10 years. Most recently Aller-7 has been the subject of multi-center, double
blind, placebo-controlled study, making it the most studied natural
ingredient of its kind. Aller-7 was shown to support normal respiratory
function in the presence of airborne allergens. Promotes clear airway
passages and easy breathing, and stabilizes mast cells, which promote
respiratory health. Aller-7 also neutralizes free radicals, which can damage
the body’s immune and respiratory systems. I am excited to offer this new
addition to our product line to my clients. Along with the other effective
natural supplements I have already used so successfully, such as Stinging
Nettles, Quercitin, Bromelain, Vit- C with bioflavonoids, and a wide
assortment of gentle Homeopathic remedies.

Natural Choices for Anxiety
(^Top)
By Eric Spinner, CNC
More than 14 million Americans suffer with anxiety
disorder and panic attacks. Anxiety is an emotional state that can range
from mild unease to intense fear. It can result from either physical or
psychological factors. An anxiety attack is not as intense as a panic
attack. During an anxiety attack, a person usually experiences fear, and may
have the feeling of impending danger or that something bad is going to
happen to them or someone they love. The most common symptoms of anxiety are
heart palpitations, stabbing pains, and tightness in the chest, sometimes
making it difficult to breathe. Muscle tension in the neck and back often
leads to headaches, backaches and muscle spasms. Other symptoms can include
sweating, dry-mouth, dizziness, digestive disturbances, and the need to
urinate frequently. The inability to relax can also lead to sleep
disturbances, like trouble falling asleep and constant waking through the
night.
According to Melvyn Werbach, M.D., there are at least six nutritional factors that can lead to an anxiety attack: Alcohol,
Caffeine, Sugar, a Lack of B-complex vitamins, Calcium & Magnesium
deficiency, and Food allergies. A person who limits or avoids these agents
can greatly reduce and even eliminate symptoms of anxiety. It may sound too
good to be true, but significant clinical research indicates that in many
cases it is all that is needed.
In addition to that, I would also recommend
some form of bodywork, like Shiatsu or massage, and deep breathing
techniques and Yoga to assist in balancing and harmonizing the body.
There are some effective nutritional supplements
that have been shown to support the biochemical derangement found with
anxiety and panic attacks. I of course start with a high potency Multi
Vitamin- Mineral formula along with additional Vit-C, and Calcium &
Magnesium.
L-Theanine, a derivative of glutamic acid, is one of the
neurotransmitters found in the brain. It is also the primary amino acid
component of green tea. L-Theanine has been the subject of several
scientific studies. L-Theanine has been shown to directly increase
production of alpha brain waves, which produce a state of deep relaxation
and mental alertness. Relora, a combination of two plant extracts, has also
been shown to promote feelings of relaxation, and may help reduce weight
gain caused by binge eating resulting from anxiety and depression. These are
just some of the cutting-edge nutrients available at your local health food
store, along with many other fine supplements to ease feelings of stress and
anxiety.

Getting a Grip On Pain
(^Top)
By Eric Spinner, CNC
Many people suffer with pain at some point in their
lives, including many with chronic pain, discomfort, and inflammation. I use
an integrated healing approach to help manage pain, one that encompasses
both conventional methods as well as traditional ones such as Shiatsu
therapy, stretching and exercise, dietary supplements (vitamins, minerals
& herbal remedies), and Homeopathy. I have had first hand experience in
dealing with severe pain and inflammation, having suffered with debilitating
sciatic pain on two different occasions, the last time over a year ago. I
had this excrutiating pain in my lower back, and radiating down both legs,
so I immediately called my medical doctor for an appointment. He confirmed
what I had was sciatic nerve pain and prescribed an anti-inflammatory
medication along with strong painkillers. I had to be able to go to work and
earn a living so these drugs were useful in helping to alleviate the pain
enough so that I could function. I also sought the help from some other
practitioners, I went to my Chiropractor, my massage therapist and an
Acupuncturist, and did stretching exercises and gave myself Shiatsu
(acupressure). All of these modalities proved helpful in reducing my
discomfort, but didn’t entirely eliminate my pain.
I then went and had a MRI taken of my lower lumbar
region of my spine, and that is what gave me the information I needed to
understand what the cause was. The MRI showed that I had too much bone
building up which was narrowing the foramens in the lumbar spine area where
the sciatic nerve exited through, causing an impingement. My doctor said I
should have a spinal epidural to give me long-term relief, and I said that
would be my second to last resort. I began to increase the dosages of my
nutritional supplements to more therapeutic amounts.
I began taking MSM 4000mg, Glucosamine sulfate 1500mg, calcium &
magnesium 1500/750mg, and Ipriflavone 600mg in two divided daily doses, and
within three weeks I was able to completely stop taking the medications I
was on! Now over a year later I am still pain free and I only take the
nutrients as needed for maintenance. I sill receive therapeutic massage once
a month, and try to stretch and exercise regularly. There are even natural
alternatives to the Cox 2 super aspirins
(Vioxx) available now to reduce
inflammation that contain a blend of nutrients like Turmeric, Ginger, White
Willow, and Bromelain to name a few. These products can safely be combined
along with the NSAIDS, and medications commonly prescribed for pain and
discomfort.

Natural
alternatives for A.D.D. & A.D.H.D.
(^Top)
By Eric Spinner, CNC
I very often have people come
in to see me with questions regarding ADD. They tell me that their children’s
teachers are encouraging them to take medications like Ritalin and Adderall,
but that they would like to try a more natural approach before starting with
the prescription drug. I know from speaking with faculty members at our
local schools that a huge problem exists, and I am writing this to hopefully
offer an alternative to those who can benefit from it. I always believe in
an integrated approach to health and healing, combining the best of
conventional medicine with traditional complimentary medicine. I never
encourage clients to discontinue taking their prescription medicines without
first speaking to their doctor.
Attention deficit disorder (ADD), and attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can affect people of all ages, and it
is estimated that over 6 million children have been diagnosed with ADD/ ADHD
in this country. It is by far the fastest growing problem affecting children
in America. It is responsible for a variety of learning and behavioral
problems, quite often affecting not only the child, but also making it
difficult for the entire family.
Factors involved with the development of ADD
include heredity, food allergies, anxiety, artificial food additives and
colors, infection, and pre-natal trauma. Even though this disorder is
classified as a learning disability, I find that the individual is often of
average or above-average intelligence, and is highly creative as well.
Symptoms of ADD include difficulty in solving problems, trouble
concentrating, distractibility, forgetfulness, inability to remember
sequences, lack of goals, mood swings, disruptiveness, and sleep disorders.
I first recommend that we change our child’s
diets to include more whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and protein
from eggs, meats and fish, and to limit junk foods, (food that contains
artificial flavors and colors), and refined sugars and flours as well. I
find that many children eat a high carb breakfast, or none at all, and by
lunchtime they are unable to think clearly. Try to balance out the carbs by
incorporating more protein into their diet. I also like to start with some
nutritional basics, a natural multi vitamin extra vitamin C, and calcium
& magnesium. Dosage is based on age and body weight. In addition to
these basics, I have found that DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), and PS
(phosphatidyl serine) are among my two favorite nutrients to elevate brain
function. Additional zinc may also be useful. Deficiencies in calcium,
magnesium, and zinc have been shown to contribute to ADD. I will sometimes
include additional B-complex vitamins into the mix, beyond what is found in
a multi vitamin.
If hyperactivity is an issue than the use of calming herbs
such as chamomile or valerian root, and homeopathic remedies like Hyland’s
Calms Forte can be helpful. I
have had many parents come back to me to say that their child’s
teacher asked if they had put their child on medication, and the parent’s
response was “No, just vitamins!” There is no “one size fits all”
approach to dealing with this growing situation, but by asking the
proper questions I can usually tailor a program that is right for the
individual.

Natural
Alternatives For Depression
(^Top)
By Eric Spinner, CNC
Depression is one of the most common medical conditions in the United
States, affecting over 17 million Americans each year. Depression is found
in twice the amount of women as in men, and does not discriminate with the
age of a person. There are different forms of depression, with varying
symptoms, durations, and degrees of severity. Why some people become
depressed and others do not, remains unclear, however, many factors are
thought to contribute to this condition. Poor diet, nutritional
deficiencies, stress, tension, past trauma, and heredity, just to name a
few. Whatever the cause is, depression begins in the part of the brain that
controls our moods. The most common form of
depression is called dysthymia, and is categorized by a low-grade, chronic
state, and can result from simply thinking negative thoughts
(unconsciously).
Seasonal
affective disorder (SAD), is when someone becomes depressed when the days
begin to get shorter and darker, and the skies are cloudier. The December
holiday time can also be a reason for people to feel " the blues",
and the suicide rate is reported to be at it’s highest during this time. There
are some proven approaches, and nutrients that can help someone deal more
effectively with this disorder. I am big believer in the power of the
mind-body connection and recommend meditation, deep breathing, yoga, and
therapeutic bodywork like Shiatsu massage for relaxing and harmonizing the
body. Of course a proper diet, consisting of whole grains, fresh fruits and
vegetables, proteins from meats, fish and eggs, and a program of regular
exercise are extremely important. Limiting refined sugars and flours and
junk foods, and excessive caffeine and alcohol, would be beneficial.
Some
very effective supplements are available at your local health food store to
help deal with depression. Starting with the basics- a high potency multi
vitamin, extra vitamin C and E, and calcium, magnesium, and zinc- and than
adding 5-HTP, Tyrosine, St. John’s Wort and essential fatty acids can make
such a dramatic difference in someone’s mood. There are also many
homeopathic remedies available that can safely be taken to alleviate stress
and tension, and elevate mood. It is also important to keep in mind, that if
someone is taking prescription medicines for depression, that they check
with their doctor before starting any complimentary alternative medical
approach. It is also very important to deal with a knowledgeable person when
purchasing your supplements.

Effective
Weight-Loss Strategies (^Top)
By Eric Spinner,
CNC
Many people will
make resolutions this New Year to improve various aspects of their lives,
including losing weight and getting in better shape. These goals can be
achieved with the information presented below, and with the commitment of
the individual. Remember to always consult with your health care provider
before starting any new program of exercise or use of nutritional
supplements.
The
first thing someone who wishes to take off weight has to do is to get rid of
all the junk food in your pantry. If you are serious about getting your body
into the shape you desire, you simply can’t eat foods that are full of
refined sugars and flours, artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives.
Foods that contain hydrogenated oils are especially bad. The next thing to
do is to replace all that junk with a variety of wholesome foods, like whole
grains (wheat, oats, barley and rye), fresh fruits and vegetables, and high
quality protein from meats, fish, and eggs. An
important thing to remember is moderation in everything, including
moderation. Anything done in excess is not good, and there should be a
balance in every aspect of our lives. I don’t feel it is necessary to
incorporate an extreme diet in order to achieve weight loss, I recommend a
balanced approach.
People will often get frustrated and discouraged while
dieting due to the limitations imposed by the diet. By using a balanced
approach, you can still enjoy the foods you are eating, and not feel as if
you are depriving yourself. I encourage clients to eat five to six light
meals a day, instead of three regular ones. Proteins can boost your
metabolism by as much as 30%, and combining some form of protein along with
the carbohydrates most of us eat too many of, is a good way to help maintain
proper insulin levels in the blood, due to release of the pancreatic hormone
glucagon. Protein induced glucagons help mobilize stored fats in the body,
enabling long term weight loss. Using a protein bar or shake can be a way to
increase the amount of meals per day. Chewing your food thoroughly, and not
drinking while eating are ways to improve digestion and prevent
malabsorption. Limit your consumption of red meat and dairy products, and
make better snack choices. Remember to drink plenty of water, spring or
distilled preferably. Maintaining a program of moderate weekly exercise can
only help to speed up the process of losing weight.
Scientifically validated supplements that can be incorporated into this
lifestyle change are available at your local health food store. Nutrients
such as chromium, essential fatty acids, starch neutralizers, and fat
metabolizers can assist in helping to achieve the desired results. Typically
the dosages are for an adult, and I suggest taking them in divided amounts,
at least twice a day. The starch blockers should be taken right at the time
someone is about to eat carbohydrates, and the dosage would be determined by
the size of the portion. CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is an essential
fatty acid, which has been shown in studies to be effective in converting
fat into lean muscle tissue, and chromium helps to prevent the loss of lean
muscle tissue.

Keeping
Your Heart
Beating Strong: (^Top)
By Eric
Spinner, C.N.C.
In these fast paced days of our lives, with all the running around to get
the kids to their game on time, and trying to meet other daily time
crunches, we don’t always have time to eat right and exercise as much as
we may like. While I always recommend trying to eat the proper amounts of
fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and high quality protein from
meats, fish, and poultry, I find that it is not always possible to do so.
The thing to keep in mind is that we should try to do everything in
moderation, including moderation. When we don’t have time to eat
nutritious foods, it’s important to make the best possible choices
regarding the meals we do consume.
Exercise is a key factor as well, in providing our bodies optimal health. It
is very important that we try to maintain a regular program of moderate
exercise at least three to four times a week. Remember to warm up prior to,
and cool down following, and stretch before, during, and after as well.
Aerobic exercise like swimming, walking, and biking, is important for
cardiovascular health. Doing aerobic exercise four to five times per week
and combining an-aerobic routines on three of those days is a great way to
keep our bodies strong and healthy.
The following natural dietary supplements are scientifically proven to help
support normal heart health. I always start with the basics- a high potency
Multi-Vitamin and add on extra Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Calcium and
Magnesium. Natural Vitamin E and Magnesium are both so important for our
hearts. In addition to these, I would normally suggest to someone Co-enzyme
Q-10, which is involved in the pumping action of muscles, and Hawthorn berry
extract. Hawthorn berry is used in Europe to help lower blood pressure, and
I’ve had terrific results with my clients when using this herb. I always
say to keep it simple, so don’t do too many things at one time, so you
will know what is helping you.
Many natural remedies are waiting at your
local health food store for all your nutritional needs. Talk to someone who
is knowledgeable, and can help guide you in the direction of good health. If
you are currently taking any medications, it is always a good idea to
consult with your physician before starting any exercise or dietary
programs.

Anti-Aging Naturally:
(^Top)
By Eric Spinner, CNC
Many people who come to see me are
concerned with the ravages of aging, such as certain degenerative
diseases like Alzheimer’s, Diabetes, and Arthritis, and also for the
answers to looking and feeling youthful- inside and out. My response to
them is based on the specific concern, but for this articles basis I
will focus primarily on warding off the damaging effects of free
radicals on our appearance. There are numerous ways to ensure long
lasting beauty without resorting to cosmetic surgery or injections of
Botox.
First I
always recommend a proper diet and lifestyle, including exercise, lots
of fresh air and water. Reducing stress in our lives is also beneficial,
since stress can play havoc with our bodies by depleting necessary
supplies of the B-complex vitamins and vitamin C. Our skin requires
adequate vitamin C for the production of elastin and collagen, and due
to our diets I find most people do not get enough. Taking a high quality
supplement like Ester-C® twice a day insures you will be getting what
you need.Ester-C® is a water soluble form of vitamin C, which protects
a cell’s watery environment, so in order to protect the fatty skin
cell membranes I would include ascorbyl-palmitate or Vitamin C
Ester). There are numerous scientific studies to substantiate the
efficacy of various nutrients being used to treat age-related diseases
such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Alpha-lipoic acid, first isolated in the 1950s, has been shown to
protect DNA and mitochondria. Recognized as a powerful antioxidant in
1988, ALA was also found to potentiate the beneficial activity of other
nutrients, making them work more efficiently. ALA is both water and fat
soluble, so it can function in both environments. ALA is also effective
in treating diabetic neuropathy. DMAE(Dimethylaminoethanol) gained in
popularity recently due to its mention in Perricone’s Wrinkle Cure
for its ability to improve skin health and appearance. I’ve always
used it as part of my program for treating ADD & ADHD, and for
Alzheimer’s disease. Coenzyme Q-10, which I talked about in Tips to
keep healthy heart beating strong, is another powerful free radical
scavenger, which aids circulation, and improves cellular oxygenation. A
more recent nutrient to make headlines is called Hyaluronic acid. It is
found in connective tissue and helps lubricate and cushion the skin.
Research is also being done on its ability to help with Arthritis.
All the above listed nutrients are among some of my favorites to
use internally to ward off the aging process. They are also being used
as ingredients in cosmeceuticals, now available in the form of skin
creams and gels to be applied topically in order to reduce
“crow’s-feet” and to help firm up the skin. One can have
youthfulness and a joy for life at any age. Living with pain and illness
need not be the inevitable idea of aging. Simply by making healthy
changes in your diet and lifestyle, and by taking the right supplements,
you can achieve the strength to boost immunity, and treat or prevent
most illness. Looking good for your age is an added bonus. Most of the
supplements listed above are now available in complexes containing a
blend of nutrients, both for oral consumption as well as in
cosmeceuticals. Remember to talk with a health care professional who is
qualified to discuss which program is right for you. In good health!

What to do, for Mold and Mildew:
(^Top)
By Eric Spinner, CNC
Many people have allergies to
mold, and other indoor allergens such as pet dander and dust mites. Molds
are able to live where nothing else can. Mold can be found all throughout
the house- in the bathroom, basement, kitchen and anywhere else it is dark
and damp. They can thrive outdoors as well, in the air, in soil, plants and
on any organic substance. Mold spores are found in predominately higher
amounts in the summer and fall, and are carried by the wind to just about
anywhere. Even cutting the lawn, hiking through tall grass, and harvesting
crops can bring on an allergic reaction. While this isn’t life
threatening, for some people with more severe allergies or asthma it can be.
Experts
say that anywhere from two to ten million dust mites live in our mattresses,
and another two million live in our pillows. A six-year-old pillow can have
one tenth of its weight from dust mites (live and dead), and mite feces. Dust mites feed on dead skin cells, which can be seen floating in the
air whenever the sun shines through the windows of your home. Every time you
fluff your pillows, or make your bed, an unhealthy cloud of feces, dust mite
body parts and dead skin cells circulate all throughout your home. Now that
you know this, don’t you want to do some thing about it?
For
dealing with mold, and other airborne allergens, use an air purification
system that has been scientifically proven to help eliminate particulates in
the air, and which kills molds, viruses and bacteria. I personally recommend
air purifiers made by a company who has been the leader in innovative air
purification products for almost twenty years. They have been involved in extensive research
studies to prove their efficacy.
These units work by using a five-stage patented technology – electron
generation, and photo-ionization- which is far more technologically advanced
than your typical Hepa filters or air purifiers advertised on radio or TV.
Even expensive air filters installed on your central air unit cant
eliminate particulates one micron or larger as effectively. These
units cover an area of up to 3000 square feet, so most homes would need only
one. There also are no filters to replace and are basically maintenance
free. After only a few hours of use, your home will smell fresher and
cleaner, like after a rain shower in April.
There
are also many natural remedies that one can use to help deal with indoor
allergies. I
have many clients who have been able to give up their prescription or over-
the-counter medications they had been using to relieve their allergy
symptoms. While these can be effective approaches, I find they usually come
with some unwanted adverse affects. Knowing what you’re allergic to
definitely helps me determine what nutrients or remedy would be most
effective for the individual. If anyone would like more information on the
air purifiers, or would like me to design a personal lifestyle program for
their concerns, they can contact me at:

Options for Managing Menopause:
(^Top)
By Eric Spinner, C.N.C.
September is Menopause Awareness Month, and I would like to offer
some alternatives for all the women who are on, or trying to decide whether
or not to go on HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy). Estimates show that as of
1998 there were more than 17 million women in this country taking synthetic
HRT to help alleviate some of the ravages of menopause. However, since July
2002 - when the first of three National Institutes of Health studies on
women taking synthetic forms of estrogen and progesterone was halted due to
an increased risk of breast cancer, heart disease, blood clots, and strokes-
many women are reconsidering their decision to begin using HRT.
Personally, I find it strange that in this country
menopause is treated more like an illness, than what it really is- a change
of life. This is a very important time in a woman’s life, and the choice
of how to handle it is an extremely important one. A woman should speak with
her Doctor, or health care provider, and ask questions regarding the risks
and benefits of using HRT. She should also try to do as much research on her
own to learn about all the possible options that exist, and then given the
information, should come to a conclusion that feels right for her.
I consult
with women on a daily basis, on what is available from “Nature’s
Medicine Cabinet” to help reduce the night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood
swings, and power surges associated with the change. I have women who come
to see me after having tried HRT, and finding the adverse effects, and
possible risks undesirable, looking for an alternative. The answer for them
may lie in naturally occurring compounds found in plants called
Phytoestrogens. These compounds have an estrogenic-like effect when the
body’s levels of estrogen are too low, and can even help block stronger
estrogens when levels are too high. Isoflavones and lignans are the two
classes of phytoestrogens found in nature. Lignans are found in Flaxseeds.
Flax is also a vegetable source of the Omega-3 essential fatty acids, which
helps reduce high trigliceride and cholesterol levels.
Isoflavones
are found in Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa), Red Clover (Trifolium
pratense), and Soy. Every woman is unique, and one source may work
better in one person than another, so sometimes it is a matter of trying one
or two to see which is most effective. There are now combination formulas
available over-the-counter to address change of life symptoms. Many women
who use my Fem-Support product tell me what a huge difference it makes for
them. For peri-menopausal women I offer a product called Black Cohosh Plus,
which also contains Don Quai (Angelica sinensis), and Chasteberry (Vitex
agnus-castus). These products contain only the highest quality raw
materials, and are standardized using European extraction methods. This is
important to consider since I have found that some women have tried products
that they purchased in a drug store or supermarket that were ineffective in
relieving their symptoms.
Some women
may find that a proper diet and Phytoestrogen supplements alone will not
entirely eliminate all their hormonal woes, and that is why I also discuss
with them the Natural Progesterone trans-dermal creams that are available
for use. Emerita and Jason Naturals are two west coast companies that
manufacture creams that offer a safe and effective alternative to synthetic
HRT. Combined with diet, exercise, and the right supplements, many women
have told me that these creams have helped them to feel like their normal
selves again without all the side effects of HRT.

Natural
Breast Cancer Therapies
(^Top)
By Eric
Spinner, CNC
October is
National Breast Cancer awareness month, so I thought I would talk about some
complimentary therapies that can be used in conjunction with conventional
treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. Breast cancer is the second
leading cause of death among women in America. The American Cancer Society
estimates that about 175,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each
year, resulting in over 40,000 deaths. One in eight women run the risk of
developing breast cancer over their lifetime. Proper diet and lifestyle
choices are crucial for preventing this as well as other forms of cancer.
Here are some recommendations for incorporating healthful choices, and
natural supplements into your lifestyle.
Start by eating more nutritious foods, like whole grains, fresh fruits and
vegetables, and quality proteins from eggs, meats and fish. Wash fruits and
veggies thoroughly, and try to use organic produce if possible. Drink
distilled water, and green tea. Avoid foods with artificial ingredients and
preservatives, refined flours and sugars. Limit caffeine and alcohol use.
Incorporate an exercise program into your weekly schedule, consisting of
aerobic and an-aerobic routines. Adequate sleep is also very important to
good health.
Scientifically
researched supplements I like to include are the herbs Astragalus and
Echinacea for immune strength, and Maitake D-Fraction and Reishi mushroom
extracts. Antioxidants like Vitamins C, E and Carotenes, and the minerals
Selenium and Zinc, help to protect our body’s cells from damaging free
radicals. Coenzyme Q-10 and Grape seed extract are two very potent
antioxidants. IP-6 (Inositol hexaphosphate), which is derived from rice
bran, is a powerful cell protector and increases our natural killer cells.
Essential fatty acids are needed for proper cell reproduction, and hormone
balance. Proteolytic enzymes are needed to reduce inflammation, and act as
free radical scavengers in the body. These are among my favorite adjuncts to
the basic supplements I would normally suggest to someone, such as a high
potency Multi Vitamin, and extra Calcium and Magnesium. I also believe in
the power of the mind and highly encourage techniques such as deep
breathing, yoga, and meditation. I feel that along with regular self-exams
and medical tests, an individual can incorporate these approaches into a
healthier lifestyle. In good health. (^Back)

Approaches for Alzheimer’s Disease (^Top)
By Eric Spinner, CNC
November is
National Alzheimer’s awareness month, and I want to take this opportunity
to share some holistic approaches with you that can be used to prevent as
well as used alongside conventional approaches to treat the illness. I have
encountered many people over the years, who either have the disease, or are
a caretaker for someone with it. In either case, the following suggestions
will make an enormous difference in the lives of all involved.
Alzheimer’s
is a type of dementia that affects more than 4 million Americans, afflicting
as many as 50% of those over eighty-five. Alois Alzheimer, a German
neurologist, first discovered this disease in 1906. Alzheimer’s is an
irreversible, and progressive disease. Severe memory loss occurs, especially
short-term memory, as the disease progresses. We all forget things from time
to time, and we should not immediately assume we have Alzheimer’s. A
simple way to tell if you have a concern is this: If you can’t remember
where you put your glasses, that’s forgetfulness. If you don’t remember
that you wear glasses, that could be a warning sign of dementia.
The first
thing we should try to do is lead a healthy lifestyle. By this I mean we
should try to eat fresh nutritious foods, avoid excess alcohol, caffeine,
junk foods and other toxins, and try to exercise three to four times a week.
Getting enough rest and reducing stress are also important. Supplements are
necessary I feel, because no matter how well you think you might be eating,
it just isn’t possible to attain the proper amounts of certain nutrients
solely from your diet. The following nutrients are in addition to what you
have heard me mention before to as “My Basics”.
Some cutting edge nutritional memory enhancers are:
Acetyl-L-carnitine
500mg, which can enhance brain metabolism, protect against free radical
damage, and help slow memory loss.
Choline
500mg, which has been proven to break the blood brain barrier and there
it is transferred into Acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter involved
with memory, especially short-term memory.
Co-Enzyme
Q10 100mg, a powerful anti-oxidant resembling vitamin E, that increases
the oxygenation of cells, and provides cellular energy.
Vitamin
E 1000iu, an anti-oxidant which has been well researched for it’s
protective qualities against damage from free radicals. The natural form is
preferred over the synthetic kind. If your bottle reads DL-alpha-tocopherol,
it is the latter. For anyone on blood thinning medications, always consult
with your physician before taking vitamin E.
Huperzine
A 50mcg, which is derived from Chinese Club Moss, has been researched in
China to help with clear thinking, and also has been shown to improve memory
and language ability in subjects with Alzheimer’s.
Phosphatidyl
serine 500mg, which is derived from Soybeans, helps to improve memory.
The
amounts listed above are to be taken twice daily. Keep in mind that the
quality of the ingredients are crucial. If you are going to spend money on
supplements, you should only buy ones that come from reputable companies
that guarantee the quality and purity of their raw materials. Having someone
across the counter with the knowledge to back up what they are selling is an
added bonus. There are various groups, such as the Alzheimer’s
Association, which are able to support and assist those who are caring for
someone with the disease. They offer counseling and training as to how to
handle such issues as difficult behaviors like aggression, suspicion, and
confusion. Seek out help, don’t try to do it all by yourself, because
ultimately your own health will decline as well. There are many
considerations in dealing with Alzheimer’s disease that need to be
addressed. After speaking with your physician or caregiver one needs to make
a decision based on what feels right for you. Any one who wishes further
information may contact me. (^Back)
Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome & Fibromyalgia:
From Fatigued to Feeling Fantastic (^Top)
By Eric Spinner, CNC
In this fast paced world we live
in, there usually isn’t enough time in a day for all of our many errands,
chores, and activities we try to accomplish. Let’s face it, we’re all
busy people, living busy lives, and burning the candle at both ends. I
myself am usually burning the midnight oil while writing these articles on
natural health to share with you. We
all get sick, and tired occasionally, and sometimes even depressed over
life’s many stressors. But for the million Americans with CFS, and over
six million with Fibromyalgia, life is spent dealing with overwhelming
fatigue and generally pain as well. Individuals with CFS usually have
trouble performing normal daily activities, which can lead to fear over the
possibility of jeopardizing a career or a personal relationship due to the
illness. The ideal scenario involves
addressing the cause or causes as soon as possible with lifestyle changes,
and nutritional support designed to move the individual from a state of
disease into one of good health. Most medications prescribed for the illness
are unsuccessful, because they tend to put a band-aid on the symptoms,
rather than address the cause. That does not mean that medicines aren’t
sometimes necessary or useful. Especially when they are used for a short
term as part of an integrated healing approach. Unfortunately, there are so
many symptoms of CFS/FM, that it may cause someone to be misdiagnosed or
even told that, “it’s in your head.” I also find that in a lot of
cases there can be a connection with a systemic yeast infection called
Candida. In this situation proper diet plays an even greater role in
regaining ones health. Avoid refined sugars and flours, wheat, caffeine,
alcohol, soda, and junk foods. Include in the diet plenty of fresh fruits
and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and high quality proteins from
meats, eggs, deep-water fish, and beans and legumes. Try having five to six
light meals a day, rather than three regular ones. Try using Spirutein from
Nature’s Plus as a way to increase the number of meals per day. Moderate
exercise may also help improve energy levels and elevate mood. Some of the
best types are the eastern arts of Tai Chi, Qi Gong, yoga and martial arts.
Utilizing therapies like Shiatsu, massage, nutritional counseling and
chiropractic care, and incorporating a more healthful diet into your
lifestyle may prove beneficial. Some
natural dietary supplements I have found to be quite effective for
increasing energy and reducing pain in individuals with CFS/FM are:
-
High potency Multi Vitamin/ Mineral
-
Vitamin C
-
Vitamin E
-
Vitamin B-12
-
Calcium, Magnesium, & Zinc
-
Essential Fatty Acids
-
Coenzyme Q-10
-
MSM
-
Malic acid
-
Acidophilus with FOS
-
Green drinks/
Foods
-
Maitake extract
-
Astragalus
-
Cordyceps
Addressing
sleep disturbances is a vital step in the recovery process. It is
recommended that a person get seven to nine hours of quality sleep per
night. Taking an herbal sleep formula designed to help someone sleep more
deeply and soundly, 30-45 minutes before bedtime can ensure this will
happen. These formulas usually contain herbs such as Valerian root, Hops,
Scullcap, Passion Flower, Wild Lettuce, Jamaica Dogwood, and Kava Kava root.
Relora, L-Theanine, and Melatonin are also useful for insomnia. Chronic
fatigue syndrome and Fibromyalgia are complex illnesses with even more
complex physical causes. The on-going symptoms of fatigue, pain, and
concentration problems can be overwhelming. Seeking a healthcare
practitioner familiar with treating CFS, and incorporating healthy lifestyle
approaches along with supportive nutritional therapies are great ways to
overcome chronic fatigue syndrome. Getting adequate rest is also critical to
gain control of the illness and get you back on the road to recovery.(^Back)
Preserving
your valuable eyesight: (^Top)
By
Eric Spinner, C.N.C.
The leading cause of vision loss in the U.S. is Macular Degeneration.
As the name suggests, this disorder is characterized by a progressive loss
of eyesight due to the degeneration of the macula, a part of the retina.
This disease is often associated with aging. Some factors that may increase
the chance of developing macular degeneration include smoking, excessive
alcohol consumption, diets high in refined sugars and flours, and saturated
animal fats, and over-exposure to environmental toxins. According to a
recent study, the additives in cigarettes have been shown to be a major
contributor in the development of this disorder. Quitting smoking now can
greatly reduce your chance of developing this condition. March is ‘Save
Your Vision’ month. Here are some sound nutritional guidelines to help you
protect your valuable eyesight. Starting off of course, with a healthy diet
rich in fresh yellow-orange fruits and dark green leafy vegetables, and a
variety of berries and cherries. The former contains a bevy of vitamins and
minerals, including carotenoids and lutein, and the latter provides a
complex of flavonoids and antioxidants. Include in the diet plenty of
whole-grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, eggs, meats, and fish. Remember to limit
alcohol, fried foods, and junk food. In order to provide our bodies with
adequate amounts of nutrients to ensure optimal vision health, I suggest
adding the following dietary supplements to the diet.
- VISION SUPPORT (a
combination of bilberry, ginkgo biloba, lutein, etc.)
- LUTEIN
- COMPLETE ESSENTIAL
FATTY ACIDS
- ANTIOXIDANT BASICS
- VITAMIN E
- VITAMIN C
- SELENIUM
- ZINC
There
are what I would consider therapeutic dosages recommended for the treatment
of MD, and the amounts needed to prevent would be determined by ones
predisposition, and lifestyle choices. Remember to speak with your health
care provider before implementing any dietary changes or supplement program.
I hope the advice that was presented above, helps to preserve your precious
gift of vision, enabling you the ability to view the many wonders life has
to offer. In good health. (^Back)

Some
ideas to help keep you well, this Holiday Season: (^Top)
By
Eric Spinner, C.N.C.
Along with all the joy and gladness of the holidays, also comes
Flu season. Many people will be out looking for natural cold and flu
remedies in the coming months. There are many different ones to choose
from, and that is why it’s especially important to have a
knowledgeable person on hand to answer your questions. Remember to
always consult with a physician before beginning any exercise or dietary
program. I am going
to share with you some ideas that may help you avoid becoming ill, and
I’ll throw in some on how to avoid that inevitable weight gain, in the
months ahead. The first thing I always mention is a healthful whole-food
diet, consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, and
whole-grains and legumes, and protein from quality lean meats,
deep-water fish, poultry, and eggs. Drink plenty of purified water, or
maybe try some organic green tea. Eat five to six light meals a day to
help keep your insulin levels stable, and try to balance out the carbs
with some form of protein. Try having a protein shake or bar as a way to
increase the number of meals per day. Add some oat bran or flax meal to
cereals and bake mixes to help insure proper elimination. Avoid junk
foods, and limit caffeine and alcohol intake. Try to exercise three to
four times a week, and include some form of an-aerobic activity.
Learning deep breathing techniques or Yoga would be beneficial.
Meditation can help relieve stress and tension. Receiving some form of
bodywork, like Shiatsu or massage on a regular basis is good for
relaxation, circulation, and energy benefits. In addition to diet and
exercise, there are also some nutrients and herbal immune enhancers I
think can be useful:
-
Vitamins A, C, D, E
-
Minerals Zinc, Selenium, Chromium
-
Essential fatty-acids
-
Astragalus, Echinacea, Elderberry, and Olive Leaf
extract
Prevention
is always the best approach, and frequent hand washing is a good way to
avoid germs. I have come across some cutting-edge products that offer
healthy living solutions in a very unique way. The first is called my
Invisible Gloves, a hand lotion that actually forms a barrier
against germs for up to four hours. Even if you wash your hands often.
It can also be used under surgical gloves to help with latex
sensitivities. The second item is called the FAB- Fresh Air Buddy. A
small personal air purifier, which can be worn when you’re in places
where the air may be questionable. Airplanes, trains, buses, office
cubicles and public restrooms, are good examples of places I won’t go
without my Buddy. The third thing I use to purify the air in my
home, and at my store, is called Fresh Air. A filterless air
purifier that uses space certified technology to get rid of indoor air
contaminants. It has an ‘Away’ mode that allows me to sanitize an
area up to 3000 square feet. This is especially useful for when mold and
mildew, smoke, or strong odors are present. All these suggestions can
help to prevent illness and added weight gain, in order to provide
optimal health throughout the holidays, and into the coming new year. In
good health! (^Back)
Preventing Diabetes Naturally: (^Top)
By
Eric Spinner, CNC
According
to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), there are over 15 million
people living in America that have Diabetes. That is equivalent to the
population of a city the size of New York. There are two types of
diabetes- Type 1 (insulin dependent), which affects roughly five to ten
percent of people with diabetes, and generally begins in adolescence,
and Type 2 (mature onset), which makes up the majority of those with the
disorder. Impaired Glucose Tolerance (a pre-diabetic condition) affects
around 10 percent of Americans, and if left untreated will develop into
Type 2 diabetes. In my opinion, improper farming techniques used in this
country over the years have depleted the soil of valuable
trace-minerals, so produce grown in it has very little to offer in the
way of nutrients like Chromium and Vanadium. This, along with improper
diet and lack of exercise, is the underlying reason that so many people
are developing diabetes as they mature.
In
order to guard against developing this condition, I suggest certain
lifestyle guidelines to follow. These would include:
Eating
plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds and
high quality protein from meats, eggs, and fish. Deep-water fish, like
salmon, tuna, and cod, are great sources of protein, and essential fatty
acids (EFA’S). Try to purchase organic foods whenever possible Foods
grown organically tend to have higher amounts of naturally occurring
trace-minerals, and other nutrients. Eating five to
six light meals a day to help keep your insulin levels stable, and try
to balance out the carbs with some form of protein. Try having a protein
shake or bar as a way to increase the number of your meals per day. Add
some oat bran or flax meal to cereals and bake mixes to help insure proper
elimination. Limit use of alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, and carbonated
drinks. Eliminate refined sugars and flours, and foods containing
artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives (junk food). Try
to do some form of moderate exercise three to five times a week. Try to
eat more carbs prior to physical activity. Remember to drink plenty of
water. Purified, or bottled preferably. The Living Water II or LV III,
are my personal choices for the most advanced water purifiers on the
market. The water produced by these, is even better than the bottled
water available for sale.
Consuming
a daily regiment of dietary supplements will help to ensure you are
getting adequate amounts of the proper nutrients to support the
Pancreas’ natural production of the hormone insulin, and to prevent
surges in blood sugar levels. The regiment should include a high potency
Multi Vitamin/ Mineral, Vitamin C plus bioflavanoids, Vitamin E,
Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Chromium, Vanadium, and herbs such as Gymnema
sylvestre, Bitter Melon, Lagerstroemia, and Fenugreek seed. Amino acids
L-Carnitine, Taurine, and L-Glutamine are useful in helping to reduce
cravings for sweets, and to help mobilize fats.
Complications
can arise if Diabetes is left untreated. Seek out a healthcare
practitioner familiar with Diabetes, and incorporate healthful lifestyle
approaches, and supportive nutritional therapies into your daily
routine. Getting adequate rest also plays vital role in preventing this
illness. The aforementioned recommendations and dietary supplements, are
what I believe will help to guide you in the direction of good health. (^Back)
Restoring Romance Naturally: (^Top)
By
Eric Spinner, C.N.C.
I really hope that everyone is keeping with their New Years
resolutions, and are achieving a proper balance and harmony in your
lifestyle choices. Always keep in mind, that if you falter in your
attempt, to tell yourself, ‘Now isn’t that interesting’, and
simply try again. With the month of February on the horizon, our
thoughts soon will turn to love and romance, in celebration of St.
Valentine’s Day. This particular holiday evokes strong feelings of
desire and passion, which could possibly lead to intimacy with your
partner. Erectile
Dysfunction (ED), is no longer a taboo topic in society. Just open up a
newspaper or magazine, or turn on your HDTV, and you will agree, that a
healthy relationship in the bedroom is big business. For the over 30
million American men who suffer with ED, the good news is there is help
inside my Nature’s Medicine Cabinet. Of course I always stress eating
a healthful and balanced diet, and maintaining some form of regular
exercise, and proper nutritional supplements to provide the body with
adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals needed for optimal health. Men
over the age of 40 need additional amounts of certain nutrients, and may
wish to consider taking something to support prostate health as well.
Remember to check with your physician before starting any
supplementation or exercise, if you are taking prescription medications.
Men, who are being treated for heart disease, hypertension, and
diabetes, are more likely to become impotent later in life. Women
too, often find that their libido wanes during menopause, and are coming
into their local health food store in search of elixirs and remedies, to
help stimulate their sex drive. A great majority of them find their
problem is solved with some fine-tuning of their diets, and the right
blend of natural phytoestrogens. There are even natural lubricants
available for women to help provide heightened sensitivity, pleasure and
arousal. For either
sex, it is important to avoid excessive consumption of alcohol, prior to
sexual encounters. Limiting animal fats, and junk foods in the diet, and
quitting smoking can have dramatic effects on ones sex life. In addition
to my usual nutritional basics, I recommend the following dietary
supplements specifically to help support healthy sexual drive, function,
and pleasure.
These
nutrients and herbals can be taken by either sex, and are now available
in a number of herbal blends on the market for improved sexual potency
and stamina. Some of these approaches may take a few weeks to kick in,
so it’s best not to wait if you want to be your best, sexually
speaking, come Valentine’s Day. In good health. (^Back)
