Why Choose Interstate?

Insurance disputes can be addressed through the use of Public Adjusting, Appraisal, or other means.

We offer both Public Adjusting and Appraisal, however the Appraisal process is often the quickest means to bring resolution to an insurance claim.

Policyholders can demand appraisal if they disagree with the insurer’s value of the loss, as in, if the policyholder thinks the insurer’s offer is too low.

The purpose of appraisal in property insurance is not to settle disputes over policy coverage, but rather to determine the value of a covered loss.

Both the policyholder and the insurance company will appoint their own appraiser, and the appraisers will choose a neutral umpire to assist in settlement.

An agreement made by any two of the three appraisal panel members will end the appraisal.

Upon completion of the appraisal process, with a signed award and payment made, the matter is typically considered resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHY IS APPRAISAL USED IN RESOLVING DISPUTES BETWEEN POLICYHOLDERS AND INSURERS?

The Appraisal provision in property insurance policies serves as a binding Alternative Dispute Resolution method, avoiding legal fees and time spent waiting on the court to settle the matter.

WHAT HAPPENS IF AN INSURer REFUSES TO allow an APPRAISAL to proceed?

When a policyholder states that they disagree with the insurer’s value of the claim, and appraisal has been properly requested, it is typically mandatory (per the insurance policy) for the insurer to allow the appraisal to proceed.

WHAT IS THE COST OF AN INSURANCE CLAIM APPRAISAL?

The policyholder must pay for their own appraiser and half of the umpire’s invoice (if the umpire is needed), no matter what the outcome is. Most appraisals can be resolved promptly for a relatively low cost and without involving an umpire, while others that are more complicated may require an umpire involvement for an optimal settlement.

It is crucial to choose an appraiser that is highly skilled in construction budgeting, building codes, manufacturer requirements, Department of Insurance regulations, claim negotiation, and client advocacy. As a general contractor, and Public Adjuster and Appraiser, we are knowledgeable in all these areas.

Interstate Consulting is part of a large vertically-integrated network of professionals, from public adjusters and appraisers, to forensic engineers and meteorologists, as well as legal specialists and technical analysts.
