wrong fueled - what is to be done now?

Tap mixed up? You drove with your other car and fueled diesel instead of petrol? Refueling can happen quickly. So that this mistake does not become extremely expensive damage: With these tips you can avoid high costs.

Misfuelling: Do not start the engine!

Misfuelling has basically negative consequences. At least the engine stops and in modern diesel vehicles, the sensitive injection system can be damaged significantly. Note: As soon as you notice your mistake, stop the refueling process immediately! Then stop the engine and let the ignition switch off! In cars of recent years is often already when opening the vehicle door - at the latest when switching on the ignition - the fuel pump of the injection system turned on. Therefore, please read the operating instructions for the exact steps to be taken on your vehicle.

Here we write, whether the tank needs to be pumped empty or whether filling the tank with the right fuel and a prudent driving style can suffice.

Gasoline instead of diesel fueled?

If you have started neither engine nor ignition, it is usually sufficient to pump out the gasoline-diesel mixture from the tank. Call us now!

However, if the engine has been running for a long time, replacement of the entire injection system including the high pressure pump, injectors, fuel lines and tank system may be required. That can cost many thousands of euros.

The repair is always required if chips have already formed in the fuel system. Because even if the engine is still running, parts of the high-pressure injection system can be damaged because gas immediately wipes the much-needed diesel lubricating film. This is often reflected by a total loss of the pumps. Many "experts" do not think it's a pity to use gasoline in diesel, especially in winter, but that's not true today!

However, if it is an older diesel vehicle (a so-called vortex or pre-chamber diesel, but no direct injection), so are a few liters of gasoline with a residual amount of diesel usually not harmful.

Diesel fueled instead of petrol?

Even with small quantities fueled: please leave the engine off. If you notice the misfuelling while driving, stop the vehicle immediately if possible and switch off the engine. Call us now!

Depending on the engine and the amount of wrong fuel, you may be able to drive carefully (and refuel with proper fuel over and over again), but it is safer to let the tank run empty. Damage to the injection system and exhaust aftertreatment can not otherwise be ruled out. If you find no information in the operating instructions, you can contact the workshop of the vehicle manufacturer.

AdBlue filled in the diesel tank?

The fact that diesel fuel is inadvertently filled into the AdBlue tank is very rare: in the small filler neck (<20 mm diameter) the fuel nozzles (diesel 25 mm, gasoline 21 mm diameter) or the usual taps from reserve canisters do not fit.

The filling of AdBlue in the diesel tank is easily possible on vehicles without misfuelling protection: When using standard five or ten liter canisters from the supermarket or the gas station with a single filler pipe. But no matter whether AdBlue was filled in the diesel tank or vice versa: consequential damage can be just as expensive as a misfuelling with gasoline.

If you have filled AdBlue in the tank and have not yet switched on the ignition, it is usually sufficient to pump off and intensively clean the tank. Call us now!

On the other hand, if you have switched on the ignition, AdBlue may already have entered the sensitive injection system. Since AdBlue acts aggressively on pipes and hoses, high damage can occur. In addition to the tank cleaning then the fuel pumps, pipes and filters must be renewed. The same applies to injectors or injection injectors.

Depending on the manufacturer and model, the recommendations for misfueling are somewhat different. Please read the operating instructions of your vehicle or contact your workshop in case of emergency.

Gasoline E10 fueled instead of gasoline E5?

Refueling E10 instead of E5 is completely harmless if your vehicle is released for E10. Otherwise, even a single wrong tank filling with E10 can lead to great damage. Call us now! In the case of misfuelling with E10 you should also follow the instructions of the vehicle manufacturer.

According to experts of the ADAC it may be sufficient to refill the tank with Super Plus without delay in order to achieve an uncritical ethanol mixture ratio again. However, if you have filled up the tank completely with E10, the pumping off of the fuel - depending on the specifications of the manufacturer - is absolutely necessary.

Regular gasoline instead of super or super plus fueled?

In most cases, you can do without pumping down if you do not demand high performance from the engine until the fuel is consumed completely. However, this means that you absolutely have to give up top speed, uphill and towing capacity and refuel petrol of the right quality as soon as possible.
