Project Description

New capsule beds installed along with facility renovation

The SPACE-D series of capsule beds has been newly installed in the Chiba Campus Training Building 1 of the Tokyo Dental College. The male dormitory area and the female dormitory area have 32 beds in total, each having 10 connected beds with front-entry and 6 beds with side-entry that resemble a private room layout.
The beds were installed using the renovation of the former welfare building for seismic reinforcement as an opportunity. In order to provide students with a full training and study environment during their internship at the Chiba Dental Center, it was decided to provide accommodation in the newly renovated Training Building No. 1.
Generally, at training camps and training accommodations, "sleeping together in a common space" is a usual practice where the trainees sleep on futons laid out on tatami mats, but they may be unable to get sound sleep because of the surrounding noise and movement, or due to lack of privacy. Such an uncomfortable environment poses a challenge for sleep. Hence, we studied the sleeping environment that would allow trainees to concentrate on their training, and decided to install capsule beds, which had been attracting attention as a new bed in student dormitories and nap rooms.

A place to get a good night's sleep and to rest the mind and body during a hard training period

Five connected capsule beds with front-entry are installed  in the student areas for men and women. It is the most basic type of layout, where the entry to the bed is at right angles to the sleeping position. Since this setup doesn't take up much space, it is suitable for arranging a large number of capsule beds within a limited room area.
The capsule interior is spacious enough for the occupant to comfortably turn over and furnishes more sleeping space for a single person. The refreshing interior panels are stucco white in color. The bed provides a calm sleeping environment by blocking any noises from the adjacent beds. The capsule's height is such that you can sit comfortably, and the roll screen at the entrance can be lowered to block out the view of the surroundings for a peaceful rest. A USB jack is also provided for smooth charging of smartphones and other electronic devices.
The six capsule beds with a side-entry installed for both the male and female faculty members form a private room-type layout, and provide a similar privacy. The beds are arranged at the center of the room with alternate entry from the left and right side of the bed. A curtain separating the entrance to the room also allows for a space for keeping desk chairs that can be used for desk work. These capsule beds have the same size and space as those for students and are equipped with facilities such as USB jack.
