Tirta Gangga – The Stunning Water Palace in East Bali

Tirta Gangga Water Palace has a complex of 1.2 acres which stretches lengthwise from east to west in the foot of Agung Mount. Its main attractions are great ponds with beautiful fishes, unique statues, and impressive green garden.

In the complex, there are three parts of area. Each of them has distinctive building.

  • At the very bottom area, there are ornament ponds with water fountain and beautiful fishes where it’s always favorite photography spot by the visitors.
  • At the middle area, there is a swimming pool with clear and cool water. Every visitor should bring change of clothes and a towel if want to swim.
  • At the higher part, there is a banyan tree and a natural spring that flows to all pools in Tirta Gangga and to settlements and rice fields around Amplapura.

Tirta Gangga Water Palace was built in 1946 by Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem (the late king of Karangasem Kingdom. Its complex almost destroyed in 1963 because of the eruption of Agung Mount.

Then, the destroyed area was rehabilitated in 1979, particularly on the water garden and others.

Name of Tirta Gangga comes word “Tirta” means “holy water” and “Gangga” means “name of a holy river in India”.

According to mean above, Tirta Gangga is a water palace with holy spring and built as a form of   respect for the Hindu People.

Explore The Water Palace and Feed The Beautiful Fishes

Most of the visitors come to Tirta Gangga Water Place for photography purpose. The visitor like to take a photo in background of beautiful pool with the 10 meters-fountain tower and traditional statues.

In the pool, you may explore it by walking through the footsteps that seem like floating on the water. The pool has clear water as like a crystal so you may see the beautiful fishes from a distance.

Besides that, you can also spend a moment to feed the beautiful fishes around the pool.  You can be get the food of the fishes at many stores outside the water palace.

The minor group of the big fishes will come to you when throwing some foods from the surface of the pool. The children very like the fish feeding activity.

After that, you may swim in the great pool with clear water while enjoying fresh atmosphere in middle area of the water palace. The good way relieve stress and relax mind.

Opening Hours and Best Time to Visit

Tirta Gangga officially open from 08.00 to 18.00. The busy time usually starts from 12.00 to 16.00 and the best time to visit is the early mornings (08.00 – 10.00 am) and the late afternoons (16.00 – 17.00).

Particularly for photograpy, you should visit early morning for a place with quieter situation and the freedom of taking photo in a good angle.

Entrance and Parking Fee

The last entrance fee of Tirta Gangga is IDR 25.000 per person for domestic visitors and IDR 40.000 per person for foreigners.

For inner car parking, it charges IDR 2.000 per car. For swimming ticket, it charges additional fee at IDR 10.000 for domestic visitors and IDR 20.000 for foreigners.

In addition, the visitors can stop a moment and have a lunch at a nearby restaurant that offers delicious cuisines.

Tirta Gangga Water Palace is located in Ababi Village, Abang District, Karangasem Regency. The trip approximately takes 2 hours 15 minutes from International Ngurah Rai Airport.

Some popular tourist spots near Tirta Gangga Water Palace are Lempuyang Temple, Taman Ujung Water Palace,  Besakih, Goa Lawah, and Virgin Beach.
