Interview with Bloomberg AlSharq on the future of Egypt after the IMF / foreign direct investment support & the outlook   Within the interview, I noted that the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) and the Ministry of finance have undertaken a solid course of action to turn around the economy, based on the existing stresses. The significant investment from the United Arab Emirates, the support of the IMF and subsequently, the support of the European Union, all ensure that the short term outlook has altered significantly & positively. This has created a fundamentally different short-term scenario for the outlook for the Egypt. Clearly, the CBE & the Ministry of Finance continue to ensure that they meet the conditionality from the IMF and other parties, not least ensuring the full flexibility of the foreign exchange market for the EGP. I was asked about the potential risks to the economy & noted that there has to be improved food security within Egypt to diminish the potential for increased imported rates of food price inflation & I also that there would be attention to the direction of the trade deficit, monetary policy and the handling of the high rate of inflation & the budget deficit. It is possible that external issues would continue to compound the high rates of inflation in Egypt, which would be addressed through monetary policy and other means. Investors and, of course, business within Egypt have been here before, a number of times. While I am of the view that the CBA is truly intent upon not repeating the mistakes of the past, it is imperative that the wider decision makers in Egypt realise that there has to be fundamental changes in governance of the economy for the long term success of policy responses. Finally, the major issue which would determine the future course for the growth in the economy would be the private sector and investment intentions & that it would find comfort in significant changes in the direction of the economy beyond the policies of the CBE and the Ministry of Finance, Short term, there would be significant inflows of foreign direct investment and some hot money into the debt markets.
