Would you like to read a short story about this painting? I focused on exploring the possibilities to help viewers of modern (abstract) paintings understand and, as such, like modern art. In this project, I chose pictures of five abstract paintings from the Museum De Lakenhal based on the current theory. I ran a controlled experiment with 100 users, during which I found that for abstract paintings with very abstract titles, adding a short story about the content of the painting will significantly increase perceived fluency and understanding of modern art and, as such, increase liking. I suggested how the insights from this research can be incorporated as a new feature into the Museum App for painting viewers! In this design, after scanning the QR painting, general information such as title and date is provided for viewers who are not seeking meaning in art. I fell in love with Cuban art in 2017 as a gallery assistant. Cuban contemporary artists have a way of showing resilience and gracefulness, but it's mixed in with the classical figure in a way that has captivated me. Last month I took a trip to Havana to bring back some incredible work. Yamir's being a favorite of mine and he rolled out a few canvases of his series, "Redox o no Redox." In this work he shows an oxidizing human figure using acrylic as well as an industrial sealant commonly used to maintain the home against tropical weather. In this case, the figure not only tells a story of resilience, but the medium as well. Here is one of my favorites from the series "Redox o no Redox" by Yamir Izquierdo Ramos. The Redox or not Redox series (2018-) is based on the principle that life itself is a phenomenon of reduction-oxidation. Breathing would be impossible without oxygen and this is the best oxidizing agent there is. For this reason, the corrosion process is natural and spontaneous; in fact, it is the return of the metal to its natural state (rust). A chemical reaction becomes physical, affecting the behavior or biological composition of the protagonists. Now, Time unites Metal with Man; figure and ground are one. Their canvases/bodies/steels blister, fracture, and age. For the artist, creation –as an essential fragment of human existence– can experience deterioration and/or seek its most stable form, that is, corrode. For this reason, he (re)approaches transcendental works and artistic styles in the History of Art. Almost without thinking about it, the architect stops being an observer of his environment to become a data collector of his daily life. Effet de neige à Petit–Montrouge by Édouard Manet 1870 courtesy of National Museum of Cardiff Painted amidst the turmoil of the 1870–71 Siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War, this landscape holds more than just artistic value. Manet, serving in the National Guard, channels the era's tension and uncertainty into his canvas. This piece is a testament to Manet's role as a pioneer of Impressionism. His approach to capturing light and shadow through this style is revolutionary. The painting presents a winter view of Petit-Montrouge, nestled in Paris's 14th arrondissement. Edvard Munch: Landscapes, Early and Late - Exhibition: “Edvard Munch: Trembling Earth” at the Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Mass. - through Oct. 15 - “This show, the first of its kind in the United States, takes a fresh approach by concentrating on Munch’s use of landscape — both as primary subject and as background — and the role of nature as the visual, emotional and philosophical wellspring for his work. And without much fuss, it gives equal space to Munch early and late, reducing their differences with a new sense of consistency based, oddly, on restlessness itself. Munch refused to stay put; his constant motion can bring to mind that of the great peripatetic postwar German artist Sigmar Polke. The clue that the Clark show will not be Munch-as-usual is evident from its first painting, “The Yellow Log” of 1912. Slightly goofy, high-spirited and devoid of figures, it barely registers as a Munch. … The show benefits from being arranged thematically, in six sections, ranging from “In the Forest” to “Chosen Places.” Nearly all include early and late paintings, as well as prints. You compare dates, subjects and mediums, as well as adjustments in style, from loosely academic to strikingly improvisatory and even abstract. The paint itself ranges from thick impasto to thin washes that can presage those of Color Field paintings.
