Don't schedule surgery on a surgeon's birthday. You have a higher chance of dying according to this study. Data from 47489 surgeons doing +700k procedures shows that patients who received surgery on the surgeon's birthday experienced higher mortality compared with patients who underwent surgery on other days. Why? 1) As the article stated, surgeons might be more distracted 2) Surgeons are more likely to do urgent (and thus complex) cases on their birthday 3) Correlation is not causation and this is just some researchers fishing for p < 0.05 to create some buzz... A super obese patient, with a xipho-pubien laparotomy scar for a duodenal perforation post EGD and a large right subcostal incision for a cholecystectomy, she had an incisional hernia with the bowel inside. She was refused bariatric surgery due to her condition and also denied hernia repair surgery due to so called high risk surgery!! If you prepare your patient properly, plan the surgery after doing accurate imaging modalities to plan your trocars placement, and have an exact idea of your entry points to the abdomen, surgery will not be impossible, yes difficult, but not impossible.
