It can feel scary to focus your marketing on a small group, rather than all the people you could help, but it works. Here's my story: Not that many years ago, I was a London wedding photographer. I started out photographing all-day weddings, mainly documentary style. The business did well until digital cameras made it easier for people to become wedding photographers, often charging less than I did, because they had other jobs during the week that paid their bills. So I niched in, focusing on small weddings at register offices, which I LOVED photographing. They were more intimate than bigger occasions and the portraits were often in the streets of London, with its rich architecture and history. But my business didn't truly thrive until I took all the full-day wedding photos and pricing off my website and only spoke about one to three-hour weddings. I remember how churned up I felt, believing that this decision would mean no more all-day weddings. And I promised myself that if it didn't work, I could switch the website back again. Within a few weeks, bookings noticeably increased and I still booked some all-day weddings. I became a convert to niching in and never needed to revert to the old website offering all sizes of London weddings.
