Platform Trials emerging as new study types for evaluating Digital Health solutions A platform trial is a specific type of clinical trial designed for efficiency and adaptability, making it well-suited for evaluating rapidly evolving interventions like digital health solutions. Platform trials are not a complete replacement for clinical trials, they offer a valuable addition to the clinical research toolbox, particularly in the fast-paced and data-rich landscape of digital health. They provide a way to accelerate the development and optimisation of effective digital health solutions while ensuring their real-world effectiveness and broader applicability. Why Platform Trials are Ideal for Digital Health > Rapid Evolution: Digital health solutions change rapidly. Traditional trials can be outdated by the time they are completed. Platform trials, with their adaptive nature, can keep pace with updates and new versions of digital tools. > Multiple Interventions: In digital health, various interventions might be worth exploring (different app features, behavioural nudges, etc.). Platform trials can simultaneously test these, increasing efficiency and speed. > Real-World Data: Digital health solutions generate data in real-time. Platform trials can integrate this data for ongoing analysis, allowing quicker identification of what's working and what's not. > Patient-Centricity: Platform trials can be designed to enroll a broader, more representative population, mirroring the real-world users of digital health apps. This can enhance the generalizability of results. Last Thursday, our advisor Steven Vandeput, PhD., participated in the WHO Regional Office for Europe's webinar on #digitalhealth reimbursement. A perfect opportunity to highlight this brand new report, don't you think? In it, WHO Europe offers a snapshot of the state of digital health in its 53 member states, focusing on seven themes: 👉 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: regulatory frameworks, funding sources, digital health literacy, etc. 👉 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 (#EHR): adoption status, interconnectivity with other systems, use in primary, secondary & tertiary healthcare, functionalities, etc. 👉 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀: online portals that provide patients with secure and real-time access to their personal health records 👉 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝘀: maturity of telehealth services or programmes 👉 #mHealth 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝘀: #mobilehealth activities 👉 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵-𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: government-sponsored apps, health and wellness apps, etc. 👉 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: policies regarding the utilisation of big data in healthcare, governance of big data use, interoperability, etc. This is a great reference work for anyone who wants to compare the digital health status of different countries. We will delve into it further and share our insights with you later. But please don't wait for us to start digging already ! (Perfect occupation for a Sunday, isn't it? 🤓) 👏 Kudos to WHO Regional Office for Europe for the big effort! To conclude, we want to share two very relevant remarks we read here on LinkedIn, two crucial elements that are underappreciated in the report: 📏 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱: digital medical technology offers a great opportunity to link funding to health outcomes. Let's use that potential! 🏃♂️🏃♀️ 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: digital health interventions can elevate countries' prevention efforts. Let's not focus on sick care only. #digitalhealth #digitalinhealth #healthcarepolicy #prevention #medtechmatters #healthdata #healthoutcomes RIZIV Agoria MedTech Europe DIGITALEUROPE
