Not that long ago “1000 songs in your pocket” was a revolution in music technology, and now the day is coming when we’ll be able to walk around with our car in our pocket. Cars are now "software-defined," meaning their capabilities can be upgraded through software rather than changing physical parts, as explained by Gartner automotive analyst Mike Ramsey. And unlike traditional vehicles, #SDVs also allow for the introduction of new functions and value. Will SDVs become as common as mp4s soon? Car manufacturers have work to do as they transform from hardware-defined to software-defined, but the fact that SDVs were a big conversation this year at #CES means we’re getting close. Agree?

BMW announced new EVs today as part of its summer 2023 lineup. The new models include the i4 xDrive 40 (an all-wheel-drive variant of the i4), the single-motor i7 eDrive50 and the hybrid 750e xDrive. In addition, the automaker revealed an updated infotainment operating system for some models.The 2024 i4 xDrive40 is an all-wheel-drive, 396-horsepower variant of the popular Gran Coupe. The all-electric vehicle has dual motors that provide an estimated 307-mile range using the standard 18-inch tires (it drops to about 282 miles with optional 19-inch wheels.) In addition, the EV can accelerate from zero to 60 in 4.9 seconds. The i4 xDrive40 will start at $61,600 with an added $995 destination fee. BMW expects US-based deliveries to begin in the third quarter of 2023.Meanwhile, the rear-wheel-drive i7 eDrive50 is powered by a single GEN5 motor, supplying 449 horsepower. BMW will announce range and performance details “closer to market launch” this fall, but we know the model will start at $105,700 (plus destination fee). Finally, the 750e xDrive combines a 308-horsepower six-cylinder internal combustion engine with a 194-horsepower electric motor. It also offers 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. In addition, the plug-in hybrid’s purely electric range is rated at 35 miles. The 750e xDrive will start at $107,000 and the same $995 destination fee. It also launches in the US this fall.BMWThe automaker is updating its infotainment operating system “in certain models.” BMW Operating System 8.5 gives the home screen “clearly arranged functions” designed to work better on the company’s curved display. Ridding itself of sub-menus, it uses a “zero-layer principle” that keeps all relevant controls and information on a single level, using widgets arranged vertically on the driver’s side. Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, and Tesla are taking EVs into the future with huge screens, AI, and in-car gaming. Cars are a lot more than just cars these days. They’re computers; they’re living rooms; and if you’ve got the money to spend, they’re enviable entertainment centers. There are a lot of wild infotainment displays out there, but #mercedesbenz is arguably at the tip of the spear when it comes to pushing boundaries. At the center of the automaker’s vision of infotainment is the MBUX system. There’s a lot to unpack in the MBUX, but highlights include driver-customized “moods” that control aspects like lighting and drive modes in addition to gesture controls that allow drivers to wave their hands for some in-car commands. Probably the crown jewel of Mercedes-Benz infotainment, however, is the Hyperscreen, a 56-inch wide single panel of curved glass that makes up the main infotainment display of EVs like the EQS. #supplychain #transportation How different are EVs really? Obviously you mind your range and look for charging stations. Equally evident is that EVs are more like smartphones on wheels than regular cars. Everything is software driven, which has taken the industry quite some time to figure out. There are other user interface changes such as intuitive door handles and starting a Tesla just requires you to tip the brake and put it into gear. Then there is one-pedal driving, which essentially means you only use the accelerator, and the car slows when you let go. Oh, and there is no noise, of course, which takes time to adjust to. Overall, there are quite a few new tricks and one could ask why many haven't been implemented much sooner. Well, and then there are the OEMs. BMW Group just announced its new vision for electric vehicles in Munich ahead of the IAA show. It showcases the brand's first truly electric architecture, and the vehicle was designed around it. Range and charging speed are 30% better than for comparable cars and all parts are fully recyclable. The company had to fundamentally change its processes and approach to design. The new platform accommodates chassis for SUVs, sedans, wagons, or convertibles, for example. BMW will begin production of an SUV at a new $1B plant in Hungary next year and manufacture sedans in Munich from 2025 on. Which competitors do they fear the most?
