Every CEO, entrepreneur, and co-founder has a good childhood / teenage story to tell. A narrative that shapes their journey and ultimately defines who they become. Recently, I stumbled upon my own story at the bottom of a stack of old documents. Perhaps not as flashy, but undoubtedly a poignant reflection of my career. My very first actual income was generated solely on the internet. At 17, I discovered Spedia, a website that monetizes ads and allocates a portion of the profit to users. The process involved downloading an application, running it on your PC to display ads while online, and earning like 50 cents per hour. The sum I accumulated was $25.55. While not substantial, it already surpassed the total advertising revenue Google has provided me in the ensuing 23 years combined (a grand total of $0.00) since I received my Spedia cheque in 2000. So, what insights have I gleaned from this experience? ➡️ My lifelong adventures invariably belong to the web and tech. The perpetually unfolding array of exciting novelties fuels my determination. ➡️ Amidst the array of scams, cons, and frauds (in Web1, Web2, or Web3), with thorough due diligence, you can always uncover legitimate business models and use cases. ➡️ Most crucially, the reason I refrained from depositing my cheque: the banking system monopolizes modern mediums of exchange. I vividly recall the bank requesting a ~$10 USD flat rate handling fee to process the cheque - a staggering 40% charge. That's how I kept the cheque and am now able to recount this story today. Yes, we also work with investors — private equity, project finance, you name it. We’ve seen meaningful investor action on ESG risk in supply chains skyrocket in the last 1-2 years. I’ve even seen investment committees rejecting deals because risk management wasn’t good enough. None of this should be a surprise, given that for many companies their supply chain is where the risk is. And I’ve also seen deals killed or delayed because deal teams applied insufficient approaches or didn’t enter due diligence with a playbook. Unverified questionnaires without complementary methods are about as effective as those customs declarations that ask if you are a smuggler. Go on site. Interview management as well as workers and others. Scrutinize supplier lists and go as far upstream and downstream as possible. Combine verifiable data and good human judgment. And assume you’re going to need a post-deal action plan, because almost no one’s management systems are where they should be. #esg #duediligence #supplychainrisk #supplychainsustainability
