Dear all, while I am thinking to the next challenging FEMQuiz, let's have a look at some bird strike examples: the first three represent a "bird-like" object (basically a gelatin cylinder) impacting on an aluminum sheet of respectively 1, 2 and 3.5 mm thickness. The fourth is the same "bird-like" object impacting on an actual wing. The SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) approach has been used in an Explicit solution along 10 ms. I am not going to tell you that this aspect is presented in my book "Computational Structural Engineering"; nevertheless I can state that Chapter 14 deals with dynamic analyses in general and also that the explicit approach is discussed and also compared with the implicit one.
