"Knowing About your team" V/s "Knowing Your Team"
Adolf Hitler while on his daily morning parade addressing his frontline soldiers would walk up to a couple of soldiers and enquire about their family, parents and sometimes even about their pet dog or cat. Calling on the soldier by his first name, he would stop to have a casual chat on everything that was personal and close to the heart of that soldier.
It is believed that the German soldiers under Adolf Hitler was over 18.5 million during the period of 1935-1945. Does that mean Hitler knew each of his soldiers personally? NO!
Hitler known as a leader, meticulously asked his generals and lieutenants, important personal details of 3 to 4 soldiers of the entire battalion he was witnessing & addressing. He would have their names, pictures & personal details memorized and the generals & lieutenants would accompany him and prompt him to stop, indicating the names & details without being noticed.
The impact of this gesture of Hitler to the soldiers was warm, soothing and most often enquiring about personal issues & some things that were close to their heart, the soldier would be prepared to die for Germany and more so for Hitler.
The word of Hitler enquiring about an ailing mother, about their family & pets and about someone who had passed away or the birth of a new child in their family would spread like wild fire within the battalion and every German soldier fighting for Hitler would feel that Hitler knew each one of them personally. Such was the impact on the German soldiers, and thus turned out to be highly motivated & dedicated army ever willing to die for Hitler.
Many managers & leaders seldom miss out on knowing "ABOUT" your team, even after having working with them for couple of years if not more. Managers assume that relationships must be restricted to discussions on work related & reviews only. This objectivity can ruin every opportunity to build a team that can deliver 100% performance and, managers transforming into a Leader.
Managers of today are only interested in "Knowing the Team" which is understanding a few of their capabilities and strength to perform a job well. Yes leveraging on individual strength, capability and competency is important for every team to function and increase productivity. But sooner or later your team will understand that you are only interested in achieving your goals through them. You will be exposed to the understanding that they are living your dream and being used for your success at work place. This is blatantly evident when managers only know their team (potential) on the job and nothing more.
You have the freedom to choose the kind of MANAGER you want to be or, the LEADER you would be remembered as. Choice must be wise!
Your team will not remember what you said, they will not remember what you did, they will only remember - How you made them feel!
