TOWN OF BRUTUS, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — You ask, we answer!

Several viewers have asked the Your Stories Team about a bridge on Route 34 that goes over the Seneca River in the Town of Brutus, in Cayuga County.

The viewers complained about the rough ride over the bridge, due to multiple potholes. They were also wondering why the bridge was reduced to one lane back in February.

The New York State Department of Transportation sent us the following statement regarding the bridge that’s located north of the Village of Weedsport:

The New York State Department of Transportation is advancing a project to replace the bridge carrying State Route 34 over the Seneca River in the Town of Brutus, Cayuga County. The project is in the design phase and is expected to begin by the spring of 2026. In the meantime, the bridge has been reduced to one lane with alternating traffic in an abundance of caution after an inspection revealed defects in the railings on one side of the structure. NYSDOT continues to monitor conditions on the bridge and performs maintenance as necessary. As the replacement project remains in the design phase, it is premature to speculate on costs.

Perhaps it was coincidental timing, but days after the YS Team shared viewers’ concerns about large potholes, crews were at the bridge Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, patching the potholes.

An electronic sign alerted drivers to expect long delays while crews patched the potholes.

We’ll make sure to pass along any updates from the DOT when it comes to the new bridge slated for that area.
