Breezway Standard Colour Range

Colour and Finish Selection

Breezway offers an extensive range of colours and finishes, many with optional colour matched handles and clips.

Selecting the right Aluminium Finish

Altair Louvre windows are available in three different surface finishes: 25 micron anodised, standard powder coating and high performance powder coating under warranty from Dulux and Akzo Nobel.

Powder coatings are polyester coatings from leading powder suppliers applied to a thickness of 50 μm and anodised finishes are to a thickness of 25 μm. Over time, weathering of powder coated surfaces should be expected, resulting in a gradual change in appearance. This will be evident in loss of gloss, chalking, colour change and erosion of the powder coatings. Selecting the right powder for the atmospheric conditions of the site and correct maintenance will be critical to the ongoing appearance of the finish.

The application of high durability powder will reduce this deterioration and is essential for severe industrial, coastal or tropical environments.

Note: Industry accepted colour variation can occur during the aluminium anodising process.

Compare Window Frames
Altair® Louvres can be fitted into a variety of aluminium and timber window frame systems.Choosing the right window framing system can be complex and is best discussed with your window manufacturer. Breezway has three framing systems that are available through approved window manufacturers. The Easyscreen, Innoscreen and SL2 Window Systems all have differing purposes as outlined below. In addition many Australian window manufacturers have designed their own aluminium or timber framing systems to suit Altair Louvre componentry.

The Altair® Louvre gallery

At the heart of our window systemsThe Altair Louvre borrows from Breezway’s 60 year louvre window heritage, whilst encompassing many innovative and patented inventions that provide improved product strength, performance and flexibility to our customers. Please note there are other louvre windows on the market, so it is important to check that you are getting a genuine Altair Louvre.

Louvre Blade Clips

The clips are designed to ensure the louvre blade is fully engaged in the clip and when closed a smooth continuous surface is created for improved aesthetics, cleaning and draining of water. The Altair Louvre clips incorporate patented concealed primary and secondary drainage channels that direct the flow of any water to the outside of the building. This is a fundamental contributor to the high water performance of the Altair Louvre.

Bearings

The bearings in the Altair Louvre are manufactured from high quality acetal. Acetal is a high strength plastic that ensures a long product life through its high strength, low friction properties and high resistance to fatigue.Breezway’s patented bearing is injected moulded and incorporates a “living hinge” system that when engaged with the clip and louvre channel provides a system that pulls the clip in tight against the channel for improved sealing when closed and disengages in the open position for easy operation. The bearing of the Altair Louvre is also designed to fit deeply into the Altair Louvre clip to grip the louvre blade and provide a positive engagement, increased strength and greater resistance to forced entry.

Rack and Pinion

The bearing and clips pivot via T shaped operating bars that engage with the bearings through a rack and pinion mechanism. This provides distribution of load and enables a strong locking force and ability to exceed 40,000 open/close cycles. That’s three times a day for over thirty five years.

Material

The Altair louvre is made from aluminium, stainless steel and industrial grade plastics. The Altair Louvre handles are made of high strength acetal and stainless steel. The acetal in particular provides a high strength, flexible handle, which unlike aluminium handle it will spring back to its original shape and position, even when bent severely.

CARE & MAINTENANCE:

Care and Maintenance of your louvres will keep them looking good and increase the life of the product. Regular maintenance is also a condition of the Breezway Warranty. More regular maintenance will be required in harsh environments such as coastal locations.

Maintaining aluminium finishes

Regular maintenance of the surface finish will be necessary to reduce the rate of weathering. The frequency of cleaning will depend on the environmental conditions, but as a guide should be done at 3 monthly intervals, or more frequently in aggressive coastal or industrial environments.

Remove loose deposits by gently brushing or hosing.
Clean using a sponge or soft brush and warm water with a mild detergent. Avoid cleaning agents with a caustic base, abrasive materials or harsh chemicals.
Rinse with clean water.
Dry with a chamois (optional).
Apply a ‘non-abrasive’ car polish to maintain the lustre of the finish (optional).

Glass maintenance

For best results glass blades should be regularly cleaned with mild, non-abrasive detergents. Low e glass blades should be installed with the coated side facing to the inside of the building and should only be cleaned with mild, non-abrasive detergents. Abrasive detergents or cleaning tools will visibly damage the low e coating.

Timber louvre blade finishes

Western Red Cedar Blades are a natural material and as such will be susceptible to colour variations and natural movement. Prior to installation or exposure to weather, all timber blade surfaces must be finished with a suitable exterior grade sealant. The finish used should be ‘non-tacky’ or ‘abrasion-resistant’ to avoid blades sticking together when closed. Dark colours can cause timber movement. The surface sealant should be re-applied to the sealant manufacturer’s instructions to avoid weathering of the timber and minimise timber movement. The product warranty will become void if these actions are not adhered to.

Louvre Maintenance

It is recommended that inspection be carried out at the time of installation and then at yearly intervals. This may be required more frequently depending upon the variation of location, and environmental conditions.

Inspection and checks

Inspect all screw fixings for firmness.
Ensure that all Stronghold System pins (if present) are firmly clicked in place.
Check the louvre clips for any degradation over time.
Check that the blade is firmly and safely positioned in the clips.
Ensure all louvre blades operate freely.
Ensure that seals are in place and clean.
The Powerlouvre Window should be operated at least once per month.

Lubrication

All internal louvre operating mechanisms are pre-lubricated, prior to assembly, with a clear lubricant where required. Under normal conditions this will be satisfactory for the life of the window.

Lock maintenance

The lock has been designed to be maintenance free. If the lock barrel needs to be replaced, for example to change the key types, or if the lock mechanism suffers damage, please contact the window fabricator that supplied the louvre.

ENERGY RATINGS:

Window Energy Ratings
Enhance the energy efficiency and comfort of a building

Maximum Ventilation

With no fixed panes and blades that open almost fully horizontally (87 degrees) Altair Louvre Windows welcome fresh, cooling breezes. These cooling breezes reduce the need for power hungry electric air conditioning systems, thereby helping to save our fragile environment.

Tight Sealing

Altair Louvre Windows have an air infiltration rating that is significantly better than the standard required for residential windows. Tight sealing reduces draughts thereby allowing heating and cooling systems to run more efficiently.

Additional Benefits of External Screening

External screens deliver additional insulating and shading benefits to Altair Louvre Windows. The Easyscreen Altair Louvre Window is the only window system currently energy rated under the Window Energy Rating Scheme (WERS) with permanent, externally fitted metal mesh screens. WERS ratings of screened products can be found at their website.

Choice of Glazing

A variety of energy efficient glazing options is available to meet local requirements. For example, in cooling climates toned glass blades or timber blades reduce the amount of hot sunlight that enters a building. In mixed and heating climates, the improved insulating properties of low e glass blades offer thermal performance comparable to clear double glazing.

Altair Louvre Windows are the only energy rated louvre windows. Energy ratings of most windows sold in Australia can be found in the Window Energy Rating Scheme section of the WERS website.

In warm climates where “cooling stars” are the major consideration, the shading offered by tinted glass or timber blades have a positive impact on the window’s energy rating.

In cold and mixed climates where “heating stars” and the balance between “heating stars” and “cooling stars” are the major consideration, the insulating properties of clear low e glass blades give comparative thermal performance to
clear double glazing.

Building Code Compliance

The energy efficiency requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC) are contained within Section J of Volume One and Part 3.12 of Volume Two. The complex interactions between the energy efficiency characteristics (U-value and solar heat gain coefficient), the size, the shading and the orientation of each window for each of the climate zones and for the various building types are expressed within extensive formulas and tables. The Australian Building Codes Board makes excel spreadsheets, known as ‘Glazing Calculators’ available on their website (www.abcb.gov.au) into which the data can be inputted to assess compliance. These glazing calculators make it easy to assess the impact of changes to the glazing, the window sizes or the window shading devices.

Analysis using the glazing calculators shows that Altair Louvre Windows can comfortably comply with the energy efficiency requirements of Section J and Part 3.12 in all climate zones, with high window area to floor area ratios possible in most climate zones when appropriate glazing and shading are used.

FALL PREVENTION:

Window Fall Prevention and Barriers
Using Altair Louvres to Meet Fall Prevention Through Openable Window Requirements

Restricted Window Openings

Clauses 3.9.2.5 and D2.24 of the Building Code of Australia detail the situations in which openable windows require fall prevention measures and the requirements that windows in these situations must meet.

Breezway has a number of solutions that can be applied to the Altair Louvre to meet these Building Code clauses. Importantly, the Fall Prevention solutions also continue to provide a good level of ventilation so the room remains comfortable and the need for air conditioning is greatly reduced.

The following Altair Louvre Window configurations have passed testing to the Australian Window Association’s industry code of practice “ICP.005 – Protection of Openable Window Testing Specification”:

A 152mm Altair Louvre Window with the Stronghold System, toughened glass or aluminium blades a maximum of 900mm long and all blade openings restricted to 100mm will comply with Clauses 3.9.2.5(b)(i)(A) and D2.24(b)(i)(A).

A 152mm Altair Louvre Window with the Stronghold System, toughened glass or aluminium blades a maximum of 900mm long, in a Breezway Easyscreen Window System with integrated security bars and all blade openings restricted to 120mm will comply with Clauses 3.9.2.5(b)(i)(A) and D2.24(b)(i)(A).

A 102mm Altair Louvre Window with the Stronghold System, toughened glass blades a maximum of 750mm long and all blade openings restricted to 80mm will comply with Clauses 3.9.2.5(b)(i)(A) and D2.24(b)(i)(A).

A 102mm Altair Louvre Window with the Stronghold System, toughened glass blades a maximum of 707mm long will comply with Clauses 3.9.2.5(b)(i)(A) and D2.24(b)(i)(A).NOTE: The Altair Louvre restricted opening device is a permanent device which cannot be removed, unlocked or overridden.
If screens will be used to provide protection as per Clauses 3.9.2.5(b)(i)(B) and D2.24(b)(i)(B) then the Altair Louvre Windows will not require the Stronghold System and will not require blade openings to be restricted. The window frame and securely fitted screen assembly should be tested to the Australian Window Association’s industry code of practice “ICP.005 – Protection of Openable Window Testing Specification” to ensure that the assembly will not permit a 125mm sphere to pass through it and resist a horizontal outward force of 250N.

Balustrades

Breezway Altair Louvre products are not a balustrade system. If Altair Louvres are used in a situation that requires a balustrade, then a system that complies with the relevant Building Codes should be installed in addition to the Altair Louvres.

SCREENS & BARS:

Screens

There are many window framing systems today that will allow a security or insect screen to be placed to the inside or outside of your Altair Louvres. Following discussions with your window manufacturer you may choose Breezway’s Altair Easyscreen or Innoscreen Window System, or we will often sell our Altair Louvre mechanisms to window manufacturers who will use their own framing system. Breezway does not manufacture screens, but there are many quality options available. Please visit our Where to Buy listing to find a window manufacturer close to you.

Features

Improved Energy Performance
Screens to the outside of louvre blades can also aid in significant improvements to the insulation and shading properties of the window. For more information see our Energy Efficiency page.Security Bars
[Breezway Altair Louvre Security Bars in the Easyscreen Window Frame]Bars

Security bars are an effective barrier when the louvre is open, that unlike screens do not reduce any air flow. Breezway has security bars available to fit 152mm (6”) blade heights in a number of different Altair Louvre Window framing systems. Security bars are not available with 102mm as they do not open sufficiently. A stainless steel mesh screen can be used as an alternative with 102mm Altair Louvres.

Features

Security Bars

Altair Louvre Windows can have optional 16mm diameter solid aluminium bars fixed to the window frame to the outside of the blades and positioned to allow the window to open fully.

There are systems available to suit various frame types. Please visit the Compare Frames page to understand the range available.

SIZING:

Heights

Standard heights do exist and are based around the chosen blade height of 102mm and 152mm. Multiples of these blades give standard window heights. Off Standard heights are available but this will add cost and result in a fixed louvre blade to act as a filler piece.

The type of window frame chosen will also affect the standard heights. Proprietary frame height will be based on the sizes for Altair Louvres plus an allowance for the outer frame type chosen. This is best discussed with your window fabricator and builder.

There are no changes to standard heights when using Altair Louvre Windows with the Stronghold. For more information, please visit the Stronghold System page.

Widths

There are no standard Altair Louvre widths.

The desired window width can be achieved through multiple louvre bays. When determining the bay widths possible a rule of thumb is the higher the wind and water performance required, the shorter the blade should be.

In cyclonic regions the bay widths may be a maximum of 600mm or in other geographic areas with lower wind loads they may extend to 900mm or more. The window frame can then be designed with multiple bays to achieve the desired frame width. With Breezway’s framing systems this can be up to 4 metres wide.

For Powerlouvre Windows, the minimum bay widths are:
2-9 blade high Powerlouvres – minimum bay width = 400mm
10-18 blade high Powerlouvres – minimum bay width = 500mm

Please note: Some off-standard heights are not available with 152mm Powerlouvres and no off-standard heights are available with 102mm Powerlouvres.

STRONGHOLD LOUVRES:

Altair® Louvres with the Stronghold® System
Providing natural ventilation where windows require fall prevention or extra strength.

Secure and Safe

Designed to mechanically retain blades without obstructing outdoor views, the Stronghold System improves blade retention and minimises the risk of blades being dislodged by impact.

Stronghold is ideal for multi-level buildings, schools, balcony enclosures, or as an added barrier in residential buildings.

The louvre blades are retained in Stronghold Clips by a pin that passes through the clips, bearing and blade. Once installed, the pins cannot be removed without tools and the blades are prevented from being removed from the clips. Pins are visible on the inside/underside of the clips.

Safeguarding Against Falls

Altair Louvre Windows with the Stronghold System and with restricted openings comply with the new provisions in the Building Code of Australia for fall prevention through openable windows and have passed testing to the Australian Window Association’s industry code of practice “ICP.005 – Protection of Openable Window Testing Specification.” As the glazed area can be opened to allow airflow they can be used to maximise natural ventilation in multi-level applications compared to other window types.

Tested to ensure superior performance

Altair Louvres with the Stronghold System have been tested to AS2047 “Windows in Buildings”. Static load testing to AS1170 has also been conducted to ensure superior performance on balconies, offices and external high level areas. Depending on the blade material, testing of Stronghold has achieved a load of 700N and up to 1500N in the open position.

Note: The Stronghold System is a window, not a balustrade system. Test reports are available from Breezway. It is the responsibility of the building designer to specify systems and products that meet the barrier and balustrade requirements for a building.
