One of the most common mistakes parents make is to touch their kids’ piercing without washing their hands first. This exposes their child to bacteria and the risk of infection.
Conversely, another mistake is using alcohol to clean the piercing spot. However, this causes a burning sensation and slows down healing as well.
There are a range of mistakes parents can unknowingly make with their kids’ ear piercing. This is why we at Omega Pediatrics always provide comprehensive aftercare instructions for parents. Not all ear piercings are equal
Contrary to what you may have heard, there are different types of piercings. They are named according to where they are placed in the ear: helix, conch, tragus, daith, rook, and more.
But the only one that we recommend for children is the earlobe type. It has the shortest healing period and is also the safest for tiny, sensitive ears. And since the lobe has no bone or cartilage, it is also the least painful of all piercing types.
What to do in case of piercing infections?
The symptoms of an infection include an extended period of redness and swelling, pus around the piercing area, prolonged pain, bleeding, and fever. If you suspect an infection in your kids’ ear piercing, take your kid to the doctor.
Although there are some over-the-counter solutions available, these could be harmful to kids’ sensitive skin. So it is recommended that you see one of our pediatricians to assess the infection and prescribe the right medication.
Do you suspect an ear piercing infection?
Best age for kids’ ear piercing
The guidelines provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics (APA) don’t indicate the correct age for ear piercing. However, most pediatricians recommend avoiding newborn piercings, instead waiting until the child is old enough to understand instructions on how to take care of the pierced ear.
Based on this, Omega Pediatrics finds the age range of 2-10 years old most suitable. At 2 years old, kids should have already received tetanus vaccinations and the earlobe is still soft but not too delicate. Also, kids 10 years old and under are less prone to keloids — an unsightly overgrowth of scar tissue.
All in all, ear piercings are a personal decision. If you do decide to move forward with piercing at a young age, make sure to go to a professional who can perform it hygienically and correctly.
