On of my favourite places to visit in Rhodes is the beautiful Kallithea Springs. It offers a unique and rejuvenating experience that combines natural beauty, history, and relaxation.
This historic site has been attracting visitors since ancient times, who believed in the healing properties of the mineral-rich waters.
Today, Kallithea Springs continues to captivate visitors from all over the world, providing a serene setting to unwind and recharge – and I really believe it’s one of the best places to spend a relaxing day in Rhodes.
I love that there’s more than just relaxation on offer here. As you explore the springs, discover the impressive architecture that blends seamlessly with the lush surroundings.
The beautiful arches, fountains, and mosaic floors were designed by Italian architect Pietro Lombardi, reflecting the amalgamation of early 20th-century Italian and Moorish styles.
Surrounded by palm trees, eucalyptus, and pine trees, the area is a nature lover’s paradise – and probably why I love it so much!

A little bit of history
In ancient times, people believed in the healing powers of Kallithea’s waters. As early as the 7th century BC, the Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines travelled to Kallithea Springs to benefit from these properties.
Archaeological findings confirm the presence of several ancient buildings and structures at the site, evidence of its importance in antiquity.
The modern history of Kallithea Springs began in 1928 when the Italian governor Mario Lago commissioned the renowned architect Pietro Lombardi to design a new facility.
The resulting architectural marvel features impressive buildings, fountains, courtyards, and terraces, blending harmoniously with the natural landscape.
During the 1930s, Kallithea Springs became a famous health resort for visitors from around the world – and I can see why it grew in popularity so quickly.
The elegant rotunda housed different types of baths, including saline and sulphurous water baths.
Over the years, the complex saw numerous renovations and improvements to cater to its growing popularity.
Unfortunately, Kallithea Springs experienced a period of decline after World War II.
However, the Municipality of Rhodes recognised its historical, architectural, and cultural value, launching a comprehensive restoration project in the late 2000s.
With a successful restoration completed in 2007, Kallithea Springs once again became a popular destination for visitors, events, and film production.
Today, the charming Kallithea Springs complex provides visitors with a fascinating glimpse into its storied past.
The site stands as a testament to ancient healing beliefs, intriguing architectural design, and the enduring charm of Rhodes.
I’d recommend exploring the well-preserved grounds and learning about Kallithea Springs’ fascinating journey through the centuries to fully appreciate its significance in history.
How to get to Kallithea Springs
To get to Kallithea Springs, there are several convenient options available for you, depending on your starting point and preferred method of travel.
From Rhodes Town: If you’re based in Rhodes Town, Kallithea Springs is approximately 9 kilometres away.
You can opt for either public transportation or private means. The local bus service runs regularly from Rhodes Town to Kallithea Springs, taking approximately 20-30 minutes.
Alternatively, if you prefer driving, car rental services are widely available in Rhodes Town, allowing you to reach Kallithea Springs within a 15-minute drive.
From Faliraki: If staying in Faliraki, Kallithea Springs is only 4 kilometres away. A short taxi ride will get you there in about 10 minutes.
You also have the option to rent a scooter or a bicycle, as the roads between Faliraki and Kallithea Springs are well-maintained and perfect for a leisurely ride.
From the Airport: For those arriving directly at Rhodes International Airport, Kallithea Springs lies 20 kilometres away.
Upon exiting the airport, you can find several car rental agencies which allow you to rent a vehicle right from the airport itself.
If you prefer public transportation, buses are available from the airport to Rhodes Town, where you can then switch to a bus bound for Kallithea Springs.
Keep in mind that during the peak summer months, Kallithea Springs can get quite busy, so I’d recommend arriving early.
Or I’d suggest visiting during the off-peak season for a more relaxed experience.
Parking at Kallithea Springs
At Kallithea Springs, there is a designated parking area offering ample space for cars and motorcycles, making it easy for you to access the springs.
The parking area is located near the entrance of Kallithea Springs, meaning it’s only a short walk to the main attractions.
Parking is free at Kallithea Springs, so if you do have a car then driving is the most convenient way of getting there.
Opening Hours & Entrance Fees
Opening Hours: Kallithea Springs is open to visitors every day from 08:00 to 20:00. I’d recommend arriving early to enjoy the pristine surroundings before the crowds descend.
Entrance Fees: At the time of writing, entrance fees are €4 per adult and €2 for children ages 12 and under. If you’re travelling as part of a group then admission reduces to €3 per person.
Note that you have to pay extra if you’d like a sunbed – around €30 for two.
Things to do at Kallithea Springs
1. Swim in the crystal clear waters
Arguably one of the best things to do at Kallithea Springs is to go for a swim in the crystal clear waters and enjoy the refreshing Mediterranean temperature.
The bay is suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced swimmers, and going for a dip is my favourite way to experience the springs.
The shallow areas near the shore are perfect for families with young children.
2. Grab a bite to eat at the café
I’d recommend visiting the on-site cafe once you start getting hungry, where you can sample delicious Greek treats and refreshments.
The outdoor terrace setting offers a fantastic view of the bay, giving you the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a light meal or drink.
3. Sunbathe on the picturesque bay
If you plan to spend the day at Kallithea Springs then I’d recommend hiring sunbeds.
Here you can relax and soak up the sun on the picturesque bay, surrounded by palm trees and charming architecture.
The beach offers comfortable sun loungers and umbrellas, ensuring you have a lovely spot to unwind and enjoy the tranquil environment.
4. See the temporary art exhibitions
Kallithea Springs features temporary art exhibitions, displaying works by local and international artists.
As you walk through the complex, you can admire paintings, sculptures and photographs, experiencing a touch of contemporary culture alongside historical architecture.
5. Explore the architecture
Kallithea Springs is home to stunning Italian architecture, dating back to the 1920s.
Discover the beautiful arched structures, marble buildings and impressive rotunda as you stroll around the pathways.
This historical site has been carefully preserved, making it an ideal destination for architecture lovers.
6. Spot the pebble mosaics
Adorned across the grounds of Kallithea Springs are intricate pebble mosaics, adding charm and character to this unique destination.
Look out for the designs as you wander through the complex.
7. Visit the nearby villages of Kalithies and Koskinou
If you have time, I’d recommend venturing beyond Kallithea Springs to explore the nearby villages of Kalithies and Koskinou.
These charming, traditional villages are ideal for experiencing authentic Greek culture, with narrow streets, vibrant houses, and welcoming locals.
