It is important to receive treatment as soon as possible in order to minimize damage and restore your oral health. There are also certain steps you can take to maximize your comfort and health until you are able to see a professional. Our pediatric dentists in New York, NY, specialize in treating kids’ dental traumas/emergencies.

TRAUMA/EMERGENCY SITUATIONS

TOOTHACHE: Toothaches are usually warning signs of a more complicated issue. They commonly occur as a result of trauma to the tooth, infection, cavities, or erupting wisdom teeth. Because there are so many possible causes, it is important for your child to see their pediatric dentist at Smile New York as soon as possible in order to have the problem identified and treated. To deal with the pain or discomfort in the meantime, over-the-counter pain medication can help.

SORE GUMS: Clean the area as well as you can – remove any food debris and have your child rinse with a warm saltwater solution. If there is facial swelling, apply a cold compress. Like with toothaches, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help.

CRACKED TOOTH: Have your child rinse their mouth with warm water to clean the area. Collect all the tooth fragments that you can and clean them off. Apply a cold compress if there is facial swelling. Dental cement can be applied to the affected tooth to preserve it and to relieve pain.

LOST FILLING OR CROWN: Like with a cracked tooth, applying a dental cement can alleviate pain and discomfort. Clove oil can also help with any pain. If it is a crown that has been loosened, clean it, and bring it in. Our pediatric dentist will try to put it back in place, but if this is not possible, a new one will be made.

KNOCKED-OUT (AVULSED) TOOTH: Recover the lost tooth, holding it only by the crown and not the root, and gently rinse it off. Do not clean it thoroughly or use any type of soap on it. Have your child hold it in place in its socket, if possible. If not, preserve it in a container of milk or saliva and bring it in.
