ASSIGNMENT: Assignment information may be printed for students or posted as "material" to Google Classroom. I use Google Classroom.

TEACHER EVALUATION: Fair speaker evaluations require focus and efficiency. It's not easy! This efficient Google Sheet provides meaningful and timely feedback for student speakers.

    Instructions:

    1) Create an "assignment" in Google Classroom.

    2) Add the Google Sheet from your Google Drive.

    3) Select "Make a copy for each student."

    4) Evaluate a student's speech.

    • Score key elements of content and delivery, Include a numerical rating for each category and skill.
    • Add guidance for growth and note areas of strength through succinct comments.
    • "Return" the evaluation to the speaker through Google Classroom---all within seconds of the speech conclusion.

When the speaker is finished, the teacher is finished! The cell formulas do the calculating. Use the completed Google Sheet to easily conference with students regarding their speaking experience.

PEER FEEDBACK: This important peer feedback process provides public speaking students with an excellent way to learn from each other and support their peers. Providing feedback to a public speaker is a weighty responsibility. As students work through this process, they'll help their classmates hone their public speaking skills while they learn about effective speech delivery.

Students have much to learn from each other. Through the peer feedback process they'll become skilled speakers more quickly because they're not just observing a speech; they're evaluating the information, the organization, and the delivery.

Peer feedback can be difficult to manage, so I've written instructions that address the peer feedback process, including considerations about motivation, careful phrasing and the goal of peer evaluation. It requires focus, maturity, and tact.

    Instructions:

    • Print the peer feedback instructions and charts for handwritten completion.
    • Assign three classmates to complete the feedback process for each student speaker; therefore, every student will evaluate three speakers and every speaker will receive feedback from three peers.
    • Collect and review feedback sheets before they're returned to the student speakers.

SPEAKER SELF-ASSESSMENT: The speaker self-assessment is a powerful and effective tool for helping students grow through their speech preparation and delivery experiences. Give your students the opportunity to own their learning with this comprehensive student self-assessment and reflection sheet. This sheet requires students to reflect and self-assess for the following areas:

    • Preparation
    • Practice
    • Speaking Experience
    • Habits of Work
    • Planning.

Select "Make a copy for each student" when you create the Google Classroom "assignment" for this self-assessment and reflection process.
