A Monterrey institution, and known far beyond the city for its superb steaks, La Nacional has much more going for it than just the quality of its beef. Opened in 2003, the spacious dining room features oxblood-red walls lined with framed black-and-white portraits, high-end white linen tablecloths and an airy mezzanine level. The kitchen specialises in traditional regional cuisine (comida regia) given a modern update; think dishes suchas tacos filled with pasta in a chill-laced tomato sauce, grilled artichokes, roasted cauliflower, and a signature ribeye topped with crushed chilli and bone marrow. The truffled French fries alone, some say, are worth a visit, while others say the same of the macadamia cheesecake. Service is excellent, the wine list strong (like the tequila cocktails) and prices represent real value for money.
