A Canfield man sentenced for injuring someone trying to stop him from stealing his car is being released from prison two years before completing his sentence.

Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge Anthony D’Onofrio has granted early release to 47-year-old Matthew McCracken who has been serving a four-to-six-year prison term.

McCracken has been in the Noble Correctional Institution since December 2022 after pleading guilty to charges of robbery, felonious assault, receiving stolen business, obstructing official business, and grand theft of a motor vehicle.

Struthers Police named McCracken as the man who in June 2022, jumped into a car outside the Sami Quick Stop on Midlothian Boulevard and began to drive away.

The owner of the car, who had left the engine running, became caught under the car door and was dragged a few feet while trying to stop the theft.

After nearly running into a gas pump, the Dodge sped away, leaving the owner behind with scrapes on his legs.

Upon learning that the car had pulled into a garage less than a mile away on Sheridan Road in Youngstown, police surrounded the home after McCracken, barricaded the door and refused to come out.

Officers forced their way into the home and arrested McCracken.

McCracken is being released from prison and placed on probation under court supervision.
