A Name Practically Synonymous With Sancerre

Half a millennium of winemaking history in Sancerre means an impressive reservoir of expertise for a family to draw on—which is how Joseph Mellot crafted their absolutely STUNNING value Sincérité Sauvignon Blanc.

Sourced from prime vineyards across the Loire, this is a throwback bottling to the time when you could buy excellent Sancerre for under $20. It might not bear the Sancerre appellation, but it captures the crushed-limestone minerality, mouthwatering zest, and beautiful golden-citrus fruit that catapulted Sancerre into enophile hearts—and onto just about every wine list—across the globe.

The Mellot name is practically synonymous with Sancerre. The family has been making wine in the region since Pierre-Etienne Mellot took up vines in 1513, and they were elevated to a position of honor when Louis XIV appointed his descendent, César Mellot, as the official wine advisor in 1698.

That kind of endorsement does wonders for building a family empire, and the Mellots have added more important vineyards in Sancerre, as well as neighboring appellations like Pouilly-Fumé and Quincy, with each passing generation. The result is one of the most impressive collections of vineyard land in the entire Loire valley, plus a network of connections with smaller growers—both absolutely essential to craft a fantastic Loire Sauvignon Blanc like this.

The sun shined bright on the Loire in the 2022 vintage, yielding an early harvest of perfectly ripe grapes. The warmer growing season seems to especially suit this value bottle, endowing the Sincérité with a touch of extra richness and texture—though it doesn’t sacrifice an ounce of verve.
