PITTSBURGH — Familiar with the rolling hills and slick greens of Shannopin Country Club, Rachel Rohanna emerged from a competitive pack Tuesday, qualifying for a spot in the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open.

Rohanna, a Waynesburg, Pa. native who has competed on the LPGA and Epson Tours, shot a 2-under 140 in the 36-hole, single-day competition.

“I just felt like I played very solid,” Rohanna said. “The first 18 holes I felt could’ve very easily been much lower than 2-under. All day I felt like I had nothing but 10-15 footers, whether it was for birdie or par.

“Overall, I think I just played really smart and kind of a dot-to-dot versus trying to overpower this course. I think I’ve learned you can’t really do that.”

VERONA – There was little unfamiliarity when Jack Urban and Zander Gibson met each other on the practice green Monday morning at Longue Vue Club.

The duo wasn’t a random pairing, by any means. In fact, at one point the two college rising seniors shared a dorm room.

Urban and Gibson let youth be served Monday, registering the day’s only round under par — a 2-under 138 — to claim victory in the 70th Fred Brand Foursomes Championship.

“It’s definitely a good positive to take into our senior years,” said Gibson, who golfs at Eastern Michigan. “We’ve got one more year left and are trying to make the most of it.

PITTSBURGH — A pair of historic team competitions at Longue Vue Club will begin the WPGA’s second week of competitions Monday.

70th WPGA Fred Brand Foursomes Championship - May 6, Longue Vue Club

Since the event was founded by Jack and Fred Brand, Jr. in 1954 in honor of their father, Fred Brand, Sr., the Fresh Brand Foursomes Championship has been a hotly contested early season challenge for local golfers.

A year ago, the duo of Will Livingston and Jimmy Meyers of Oakmont Country Club commanded the field with a +2 (142) mark, edging Jeff Varga (Wildwood Golf Club) and Ian Bangor (Montour heights Country Club) by four strokes.

Hall of Fame

Western Pennsylvania has a lengthy, rich and storied history.

The Western Pennsylvania Golf Association celebrated its centennial in 1998. Part of this celebration was to recognize area golfers and contributors who had an impact on our history. The Western Pennsylvania Golf Hall of Fame was established in 2013 to celebrate this history. The inaugural class consisted of William C. Fownes, Jr., Jock Hutchison, Arnold Palmer, Carol Semple Thompson, and Lew Worsham.

Scholarship Fund

Founded in 1941, nearly 700 students have received a scholarship.

The WPGA Scholarship Fund was founded in 1941 and awarded two scholarships to the University of Pittsburgh and another to Duquesne University. The first Caddie Welfare Committee surfaced in 1927 and addressed issues to benefit of caddies at the various Member Clubs of the Association. Fourteen years later the movement secured enough money to sponsor its first scholars.
