Overturned fuel tanker causes road closure in Johnston County

On Friday afternoon, an overturned and leaking gas tanker caused a road closure on NC Highway 96 North of Little Devine Road in Johnston County.

A witness who followed the fully loaded tanker for nearly five miles reported the driver was driving erratically before over-correcting the truck, causing it to roll over five to seven times.

According to reports, the truck was fully loaded with 7,000 lbs of fuel and began leaking on the highway after the crash.

The driver was injured and transported to Wake Med.

Neighbors told WRAL this is not the first time a tanker has overturned at this location.

Last August, another truck did the same thing in the same spot, according to the resident.

Crews are expected to be on the scene for many hours.
