I've been shopping at A Matter of Health for over four years now and ...
... I never finished my review because it's been nine years. And now sadly this location has just closed (January 2023). I will miss it and the people.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 4373116039Jan 24, 2019
There's a supermarket side and an other side that they call "Supplements". That's where you'll find everything but food. Makeup, underwear, soaps, lotions, vitamins etc etc etc are all in Supplements.
There's a separate section with their salad/juice/smoothie/soup/coffee bar.
Staff leaves you to your own device. No greetings, no encouragement, seems a huge bother if you ask for directions to an item. Print a map and I won't trouble you.
Well I got the soap I came for and I didn't notice anything else I could get at A Matter of Health that I cannot find at many other places.
I wasn't loving the prices either but Rome and all that.
I don't think I'll be back unless it's work related.
The END.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 10Oh no 0 - Pete The C.Manhattan, NY0181Dec 19, 2021
This store has a wide variety of snacks, soups, salads, dips and really good cold brewed coffee in boxes. They also have excellent cat food ~ at least my cat thinks so.
It is easy to find things there are everybody is very nice.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rebecca S.New York, NY51319340Jul 19, 2022
Amazing fresh food I absolutely love their produce and dairy section. You can find things here that are not available anywhere else

I always liked this place. It has mostly, if not entirely, organic food. It is on the expensive side and a bit chaotic at check out, but it's a better alternative for quality food than Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. The service is better too. I recommend the sushi and juice bars. Probably best sushi you'll get in a grocery store in NYC. The juice bar can be slow, but the product is good.

It use to be a really good store ten years ago.
Now some of the staff are nasty, ( morning staff ) indifferent, not knowledgable, argumentative at times. The place is not the cleanest. They have mice and a cat that lives at the store full time.
Not that healthy!
Maybe management should replace/or train their employees.
Half of them just seem to be money takers with no knowledge of any customer service or product.
Do yourself a favor, find another place to shop.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Gabe R.ASTORIA, NY015Sep 23, 2021
I went there to buy lunch. The attitude is so rude. I'm not asked if I want a bag. Even though I clearly have luggage. Then I asked for a bag and she says $.25. And this is for a huge shopping bag. They don't have small bags for lunch anymore? I don't even care if I would it's just a rudesit's just attitude how she speaks to the customers I can't stand.
Whoever owns the store, pay attention to customer service. It's not just what you sell but the professionalism and politeness of who is selling it.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - R M.Boulder, CO0201Sep 19, 2022
So overpriced. Some of their frozen foods look like they've been sitting forever, such as Beyond Meat burgers. Everyone buys them at Whole Foods for $3,29 instead of almost twice the price at this store.

After a bad experience, a few months ago, I swore up and down that I would never go into this place again. However, being in quarantine with my bf, who lives around the corner, it has turned out differently. Now, after 3 bad experiences, one after the other, I mean what I say. No more!
Firstly, all the people who say that the prices rarely match the sticker on the shelves are 100% correct. My first bad experience was because of this, and I got shouted at in front of a store full of people when I pointed it out. It REALLY annoys me when a store is just too lazy to make it's staff put price stickers on every single item, and I'm starting to think that this is some kind of a generalized marketing "scam" as many other stores do it, and it is NOT acceptable. Who of us has a budget where we can afford sticker shock at the till? Not me! None of the products are in front of the corresponding sticker - EVER. Invariably, this holds up the line at the checkout, too.
The second incident was when I bought flax wraps from this store, and they turned out to be mouldy and inedible. Try getting your money back. HA!
The third time was the clinker. I was lined up outside the store, complete with gloves and mask, with ONE other person 6 ft behind me. The store is on the corner of the street, and there is currently scaffolding which means that there is no space. They were letting people into the store, one at a time, with 2 people instore as a maximum. All of a sudden, the door was unlocked and an Indian woman, obviously the boss, pointed to a large, tall, delivery of heavy boxes on the street and signaled to an employee to move them. Two minutes later, he appeared with a heavy, hydraulic, scoop and pointed to me to move. To where, who knows? Without giving me any time, he scooped up the entire pile, moved towards me 6 inches and dropped them at my feet - missing me by thismuch! Whether by accident, or design, who knows? He also clipped the woman behind me, and the boxes went everywhere!!
Badly shaken, I knocked on the door to complain. Said woman boss, laughed, mumbled something under her breath at me in a different language and slammed the door in my face. No word of apology, nothing!
This has NOT been my experience at their other store, further along 1st Avenue, which seems to have a completely different vibe.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Victoria B.New York, NY6381Jul 25, 2021
I come here somewhat regularly - mainly when I need something I can't find at the farmers's market. They have unique things. Please educate your employees on service animals. Service animals are not required to remain outside and I don't appreciate being told multiple times that I cannot bring him in. Especially when I walk by after closing and I regularly see a cat in the window. I'm sure having a cat roaming the aisles isn't the most sanitary thing - particularly in the produce area.
