Q:
I need advice for what else to order that I'm missing out on as a non-korean. I've already had various bbq/bulgogi, Soft tofu stew, bimbimbap, japchae noodles... what else is really great here?
A:
For sure try the Galbi (Kalbi for us in Hawaii) and the Squid and Pork Belly!

Do they serve purple rice anymore? I see pictures of everyone on here with purple rice but I went 3 days ago and they gave us white rice.. Did you have to ask for purple rice?
A:
Yes, server asked me but sometimes you have to ask for it. It's actually mixture of white & black rice. You can make it at home easily, about 3-5 cups of white rice to about a handful of black rice(about 1-2 table spoons) it will turns out better if… more

Terrific food. Apps are amazing. Hot pots are amazing. Dishes are amazing. Service is friendly. There's only a couple staff members for the whole place, and they work their butts off.
The place isn't big, but it's not too tight either. Plenty of tables, but it gets busy fast.
Can't recommend this place enough. You'll leave with your tummy full and your taste buds happy.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 2, 2024
I was really excited to get something warm and soupy after arriving from the airport into freezing weather.
Came here midday and there were only a few tables filled. We were greeted and sat right away. Loved that they put a heat lamp near where we were sitting to keep the area warm. We decided to order the army stew and it was huge! Between the two of us, we ate about 2/3 of it.
The army stew was great and had many proteins and vegetables. Our meal also came with some banchan which were also delicious. Our server was great, always checking in on us.
The parking is small and a bit tight. The entrance is also off to the side a bit so don't mistaken it for the pizza place next door.ArmHelpful 4Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Hannah G.Portland, OR11445Jan 20, 2024
[Food]: 4/5
- Yukgaejang was solid, full of scallion, beef, and noodle, one of my personal favorites and iI feel like it was made well
- Duk Gook was also pretty good, rice cakes were chewy and we enjoyed how eggy it was
- Haemul PaJeon was SUPER packed full of seafood and so far is one of my favorite seafood pancakes in the area
- Tteokbokki was good just had a LOT of black pepper which took over the flavor a little more than I usually like but again, pretty solid
- PanJeon was okay, i liked the bean sprout and pickled radish the most
[Service]: 5/5
- our waiter was extremely tentative and friendly!
[Ambiance]: 4/5
- nothing crazy, but was cozy.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 12, 2024Updated review
Update 1/2024: The old Chungdam seems to be no more. There appears to be a change of management or ownership and this place is now a shell of its former self. The menu has shrunk substantially. All the nice Korean ladies are now gone! The food today was pretty mediocre at best. Very salty. I got the Dduk Mandu gook. The rice cake was over cooked and very soft. The banchan were pretty bland. The service however was spot on and they continue to accept American Express.

The sides are a little on the boring side as there is no variety. But I think they have one of the best Galibi Tang in the Portland area. I highly recommend anyone give this restaurant a try!

Just wanted to give a quick update about how amazing these dishes I've recently tried are. I highly recommend the cheese chicken and the seafood pancake as they're such high quality and the portions are so generous. I also had the chance to chat with the staff more, and they are so so sweet and friendly. Highly recommend checking this spot out.

The inside of the store has really cute wooden booths that remind me of Korea, big soju ads that really add to the authenticity, and very kind service.
All of their dishes are good, but some of my favorites are their buddaejjigae (which is a huge portion and can serve 2-4 people!), ddeokbokki, cheese chicken, and other meats. Although it may take a while to come out, their dishes always come out piping hot and worth the wait. The only thing is that their menus have shrunk a lot than what they used to be and their prices have risen (but it can be expected post-COVID). Overall, I think this is a great place to check out if you're craving some Korean (or just yummy) food! - C... D.San Francisco, CA2284117Feb 11, 2024Updated review
This is now my new ( old) favorite- there was a dark period in which they attempted to incorporate a sushi bar ()... but that has passed and they're back ( and better!) to serving cozy Korean comfort food- with a nice assortment of banchan, good serving sizes - we were very pleased with the quality and cooking ( husband is Korean, and fondly remembrances his mothers cooking)...

Hi CD,
The fried chicken here is a must try! It is one of my personal favorites. :)Dec 16, 2019Previous reviewStill our go-to for korean comfort food- usually a dinner combo ( meat entree and definitely the soondaboo jigae- the spicy seafood tofu soup)- with all the ban chan ( side dishes) and an extra bowl or rice - it's dinner for two!
The price point and quality have stayed consistent- hope this continues!!!Nov 19, 2017Previous reviewLove the spicy squid (its a stir fry with plenty of veggies) and the pork belly with squid (stir fry )also looks amazing as well. The Banchan is a nice variety, my Korean friend loves this place as well- not to mention it has actual Korean little old ladies supervising. The Kim chee is fresh, the dishes are really well done...

I have been looking to eat more korean food in Portland but many spots don't have certain dishes I am looking for. However the food here is decent. If you haven't had Korean food before this is a good place to try it. I originally came here looking for seolleongtang and/or galbitang since I saw menus with it from Yelp. However, they do not offer that anymore. Their menu is a lot smaller than what it once was. The korean dishes they offer are the common ones you see typically like budae Jjigae, bibimbap, bulgogi, korean seafood pancake, etc. they also have a sushi menu too with a variety of sushi options. I saw a lot of people around me order their budae Jjigae.
I ordered a Soondubu Jjigae with beef. The Soondubu was packed with lots of soft tofu, but very minimal amount of beef in it. It had more zucchini in it than beef. The soup also had some onions and scallions too. It came with a bowl of white rice and banchan. The banchan was okay, nothing special. If you want more banchan you can ask them for more. The portion size of the Soondubu was big, I couldn't finish it all.
The service was good, the waitress was quick with the orders and brought everything I needed. I didn't have much interaction with them except ordering food, and paying for it.
The restaurant is clean, and there is parking here too.
Overall, this place is decent if you're craving some Korean food.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Steve A.Galveston, TX179157162Sep 8, 2023
Extremely tasty, friendly staff, plenty of parking.
Some musts are the seafood pancake, Mandu dukguk La gabi, and the classic bulgogi. Great for family style.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Cong Y.Northeast Portland, Portland, OR07Feb 26, 2024
I used to like their spicy pork. Not sure if they changed owner or not. They now have some sushi. Atmosphere feels warm.
