Just had to write a review for this company. My toilet needed fixing - constantly running or making a consistent whining noise when flushed. Not cool. Reached out to several companies - only DC Handyman called me back. And thank goodness they did!
First of, their desk is run by Chastity. Whatever they are paying her, they should pay more. Having dealt with several home repair issues this summer, I've called several specialty repair shops, and none of them have someone as professional and customer centric as Chastity. From that first interaction, she gave me confidence in the company. The estimate was more than I was expecting ($425 for 2 hours of work), but Chastity was able to explain costs and expectations so well that I decided to just have faith. You get what you pay for, right?
Next, I met Avishay and his crew. They took a look at my toilet and thought that a replacement of the tank hardware would fix the problem. Except when they tried to remove the parts, it turns out this particular toilet is an all-or-nothing type, as in the tank part that was the problem can't be removed. It was looking like my only option was a full replacement of the toilet. Yikes! I was busy researching how much does a new toilet cost, but Avishay continued to work on the part. He figured out how to open the part and tried a variety of fixes (cleaning, tightening, etc) to get it to work. After about 40 minutes of work - it did! He was able to take my very finicky and specialized toilet and work some magic. I would expect the average repairman would have just said it wasn't worth it, and advised me to just get a new one. But Avishay was determined, and I am very grateful.
Chastity followed up with me after the work was done to confirm my satisfaction and confirm final cost. At the end of it all, I was charged $250 for an hour of work, and my toilet is fixed! I am delighted, and I will definitely be keeping this company on file for my next repair job.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 20, 2019Updated review
Our previous review of this business was highly complimentary. Sad to say, further experiences proved to be very much a mixed bag, and although I rather like the company owner (who does the estimating) and some of the workers whom we have met, I feel I have an obligation to other Yelp users to be candid.
We had them do some very typical handyman jobs involving carpentry, tile work and reglazing a tub, and that work was done quite well.
On the other hand, redoing the wood floor in an entire apartment turned out less well - although we had asked for laying down a clear coating, showing the wonderful color of the wood, for some reason the workman who had done a great job on a previous floor sanding job used stain on part of the floor, perhaps permanently changing the color of the floor. In addition, the floor was left a bit rough, as if the sawdust from the sanding had not been sufficiently swept up or vacuumed; the result is that the floor will be harder to clean. And some of the stain was splashed up on the lower part of the apartment walls that had just been repainted. To its credit, the company came back to clean up the splashed stain; it also offered to redo the floor, but by that time it was too late before our new tenants were supposed to move in.
We also asked the company to recoat a leaking porch roof, and first they used the wrong material -- different from what had been discussed -- and then they did such a poor job that the leaks continued and we had to recoat the roof properly.
So we might well call this company again, but with serious reservations about the breadth of services they can provide well. It's too bad, because our initial experiences were so promising.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Dec 6, 2018Previous reviewWe used this company to paint a back yard fence and do a cautious sanding and refinishing of the wood floor in the kitchen of an old DC row house. Unlike other companies that looked at this job, the estimator, Israel (the owner of the company I now understand), noticed some issues with some of the boards on the fence, but even including this repair their price was comparable to other companies; and Israel was ready to do the kitchen floor without using the huge machine sanders that have a tendency to dig too deeply into the wood. The work they did on both parts of the job was just fine, and done on schedule.
By contrast, when we asked them to bid a job on a deck, we went with some other company's bid, and boy was it a mistake! That other company did not do the work on time and its work was not as agreed (look though my other reviews for that one, don't want to mention their competitor here....). Next time, we will want to stick with DC Handyman! - Krishanu S.Cypress, TX1250Mar 19, 2021
Ben did an outstanding job and went above and beyond. We had a bad leak and he was able to figure out what was wrong, take us through multiple options, and fix the leak quickly and didn't charge extra. He drove 45 minutes on Thursday night to get this done. Highly recommend.

DCHandmyman owes me $2,000 and I will have to take them to court to try to get it back.
Beware of "paying for half of the job upfront". In my case they took my money 7 months ago and never did the work.
This business is run by someone who apparently doesn't live in US and when you call you can never get a straight answer. It is clear to me they have used the Pandemic to their advantage by using it as an excuse for their malfeasance. I am blown away by the fraud, deceit and lack of decency that characterize this small business.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Patrick C.Washington, DC019Dec 20, 2021Updated review
We had weatherstripping issues on a door, and Ben responded right away and was able to get someone out within a couple days. Wilfredo was great on site -- on time and well-masked -- and he quickly assessed the need, took a variety of steps to get things into shape, and explained what needed to be done long-term. Ben checked in afterward and had a simple mobile payment option. The whole experience was good and easy, and we appreciated it.

We needed to extend a tiled pad that sat under our old stacked washer and dryer -- and get the job done before the new, larger washer and dryer arrived. We reached out to DC Handyman based on the strength of its Yelp reviews and were happy to find our experienced matched others. Everyone we worked with was friendly and professional: from communication and logistics with Chasity, to the initial visit and estimate from Israel, to the build with Miguel and his team. Even billing happened through a clear and easy online payment system. The level of organization here is way above par.
This job was a little unusual, but both Israel and Miguel quickly had good ideas on how to approach it. Not only did the estimate came in several hundred below their competitors, but the team had nice teamwork and knocked out a strong, good-looking job in a morning, even adjusting the path mid-job to optimize the appearance. Chasity followed up afterward to check how everything had gone. Throughout the experience, it felt like the company was working to make easy everything in this industry that usually feels hard. For the future, I'm glad knowing they're in business. - Aug 23, 2016Updated reviewPurchased a Yelp Deal
E-mail them via their e-mail address and they will get back to you withing a few hours!
They came and installed my door and lock within 15 minutes and did a great job. They call ahead and flexibly coordinate with you. Great service. Will use any time in the future.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Aug 15, 2016Previous reviewThey might do good work. However, they don"t seem to answer the phone or email. I called them 5 times today and sent them an email. No response. I did it in daytime hours and night time. Ended up doing it myself anyway. They likely overworked themselves.

Miguel did some work in our bathroom hanging towel bars, a toilet paper holder, and installing a medicine cabinet. Work was done efficiently and well.
What was particularly impressive was the level of communication throughout. Chasity was excellent at confirming and updating arrival times. The entire process was seamless and if we ever need handyman work done again, we'll definitely give them a call.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - E E.Northwest Washington, Washington, DC0221Aug 14, 2018
