So we were on the freeway heading to Salem, VA from Columbus, OH. As usual, hubby gave me very little notice that he was incredibly hungry and wanted to stop soon for dinner. Our MO when traveling is NOT to eat at chain restaurants or any place we can eat at when home. Or any place we've been before. So I Google mapped our location and route to Salem. I highlighted restaurants and started working way down the road. The first place I came to that met our criteria was Dolly's. I clicked on and checked out the menu to make sure there were options we'd both like. CHECK. Next I looked at the reviews - and wanted one recent. Sure enough, there were several reviews left just days before and all said the same thing - this is a must eat at place. So we did.
We pulled in at dinner time on a Tuesday. Regardless, we were seated right away. A nice little table tucked at the end of the counter - a nice view of most of the restaurant and down the counter into the kitchen. The menu was just as I saw online. One salad that was perfect for me - the grilled chicken salad. Hubby had more to pick from and asked our waitress for help. He ended up with the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich with hash browns.
Our waitress was young, friendly and attentive. She kept our drinks topped off and checked back with us often. However, before we could even get too comfortable, our food was ready. Amazingly quick service. But no complaints about that - we still had a couple hours to drive before our trip down was over. We both dug in immediately and ate every single bite. The salad had a generous amount of flavorful chicken and plenty of fixings to boot. Hubby said his sandwich was delicious and the deep fried hoagie roll was crispy on the outside and hot and soft inside.
After the waitress checked to make sure we didn't save room for dessert, she brought our checks. And I was more than happy to pay as the prices were so low - compared to the other meals we will eat out on this trip. You pay at the register on the way out - and that was the only slow down. The people is front of us must have had an issue or they held a really long conversation with the cashier - something made it so hubby used the restroom while I stood in line then he stood in line while I used the restroom and then finally it was our turn to pay.
I highly recommend you eat here if you want good food, fair prices, friendly staff and a quick meal.Helpful 2Thanks 2Love this 2Oh no 0 - Dec 12, 2023
Stopped here on a roadtrip home and it was very yummy! We had amazing service and everything came out quick. We got a breakfast burrito, Philly cheese steak and the Starbucks double shot milkshake. This was AMAZING! A great diner and great stop along the way.

Just off the 77 interstate, so easy in and out.
Truly a diner experience. Booths and counter service.
Lots of staff and all very friendly.
We had breakfast, mushroom omelette with hashbrowns and a supreme omelette. It was delivered hot and quick even had rye toast, but they upcharge for it
They give a 3% discount for cash.
Definitely check it out if you are in Princeton, Virginia.Helpful 0Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 1 - 213522Apr 28, 2023
What a hidden gem! Very close to the intersection of I-77 and 460. Been past the area many times and never heard of it until today. Glad I found it!
Outside looks awful but the inside is the exact opposite. Spacious seating, cute red and white decor, bright lighting, low noise level, super clean. Very nice interior.
Open grill area with lots of competent staff. Food for all orders I noticed were made quickly, efficiently and picked up by waitstaff almost immediately. No cold food at their pass.
Waitress was so sweet and checked in several times without being intrusive. She was a dear.
Menu had lots of good choices. I opted for the Philly Cheesesteak and fries. The fries were divine. Must be double fried because they had a crumbly fried coating, crisp exterior and pillowy softness inside. Amazing!
Sandwich was also excellent. Shaved steak, lots of Swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato. Added mushrooms to it. Bun was soft and smooshy, perfect for the filling. Held together but not overpowering to the cheesesteak.
Saw some of the meals other patrons ordered. Everything looked amazing especially the onion rings. Wish I had had room for a dessert because the Holy Cow was over the top awesome looking.
I will DEFINITELY be back.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Judith S.Bluefield, WV02Apr 8, 2024

We were so sad to not have had the same experience as others. This was a random find on a road trip. I saw the billboard, so we stopped.
I will start with a positive, the service was great! This place was PACKED, and I think they handled it well.
The not so positive part, our food was not good at all. My husband got a chef salad, and was disappointed to be given what tasted like hidden valley ranch (yuck) and my burger was just mushy. Perhaps it was an off day, but either way we wouldn't come back.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Ina R.OH, OH02043Mar 6, 2024
I have for a long time followed Dolly's Diner in Princeton,WV for several years. We finally able to stop. Fascinating dining experience it felt like you were walking into a great little community. The staff were very friendly and efficient. Since we were taking our food with us; we were able to watch the food preparation and what an experience it was. Everyone had a job and it operated like a well oiled machine . Great to watch! The food was hot and delicious. We had the daily special which was the Super Burger served with your choice of fries or onion rings. I am so glad we got to stop. It was like going to a great little home town atmosphere.

Service was great, food was great, good for large gatherings and my "people watching" was highly fulfilling! Apologies for the pic of only part of my tenderloin sandwich but it was so good I forgot to take one until I was that far in.
